Is Your Dog Itchy All the Time? It Might Be the Gold Coast Climate
Share
If your dog is scratching, nibbling or licking themselves more than usual, you're not alone. Itchy dogs are one of the most common things Gold Coast owners ask us about. Fleas and food allergies usually get blamed first, but there's another factor that often gets missed: the climate itself.
The Gold Coast is a paradise for the rest of us, but for dogs with sensitive skin it can mean chronic itchiness, irritation and discomfort. Here's what's actually causing the itch, and what helps.
Why the local climate is hard on canine skin
Humidity drives yeast and bacterial overgrowth
Humidity doesn't just affect human hair. Moisture trapped in the coat creates the conditions for yeast and bacteria to thrive, especially in folds, underarms, paws and ears. Dogs with allergies or dense coats are especially vulnerable.
Salt and sand strip protective oils
Beach trips are great. Salt and sand are not great for canine skin. They strip the natural oils that protect the skin barrier, leaving dryness and irritation behind. If salt isn't rinsed out properly, it sits in the coat for days.
Grass seeds and pollen
Local parks and trails are full of grass seeds and high-pollen plants. Both common allergens, both capable of triggering inflammation, especially in paws and skin folds.
Insects and parasites thrive year-round
Warm humid conditions are perfect for fleas, ticks and biting midges. Even with parasite control in place, some dogs react severely to a single bite, especially during peak summer.
Signs the itch is environmental
Every dog scratches sometimes. The signs that environmental triggers are at play:
- Licking or chewing paws excessively.
- Rubbing the face on carpet or furniture.
- Scratching ears or shaking the head a lot.
- Red or inflamed skin patches.
- Bald spots from over-grooming.
- Skin odour or visibly oily coat.
- Excessive shedding or a dull coat texture.
If you've ruled out fleas and your vet hasn't pinpointed a specific medical issue, the climate and local allergens may be tipping your dog's skin over the edge.

Deep cleansing with plant-based products
We wash with Melanie Newman Salon Essentials. Plant-based, cruelty-free, sulphate-free, and pH balanced for canine skin. The shampoo soothes inflammation, rebalances pH, removes allergens and bacteria, and replenishes moisture without harsh chemicals. We tailor the specific product to your dog's skin and coat condition.
Thorough rinsing and drying
The single biggest cause of itch we see at home? Shampoo residue left behind. We rinse fully and dry properly with adjustable lower-volume dryers that don't stress your dog out.
Deshedding so the skin can breathe
For double-coated breeds and heavy shedders, trapped undercoat holds moisture, allergens and bacteria against the skin. A deshed session removes that built-up undercoat so the skin can breathe.
Paw and ear checks
We clean and inspect ears, between paw pads, and around any folds where yeast and bacteria like to settle. Anything that looks like infection or unusual irritation gets flagged for your vet.
At-home advice
Our team is happy to walk you through:
- The best brush for your dog's coat type.
- How often to bathe at home without over-drying.
- What to watch for seasonally.
- How to space out professional grooms based on skin condition.
What helps at home
- Rinse after the beach. Always rinse with fresh water after beach visits to remove salt and sand before they dry.
- Use dog-safe wipes between baths. Helps remove allergens without over-bathing.
- Talk to your vet about omega-3. Fish oil supplements support skin health for many dogs.
- Wash bedding regularly. Dust mites and allergens build up fast in soft surfaces, especially in humid homes.
- Check feet daily during seed season. Grass seeds can burrow into paws and between toes.
