Unleash the Fun: Dog-Friendly Beaches on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has some of the best off-leash dog beaches in Australia. Here's a working guide to the main spots, what each one is best for, and what to bring along. Off-leash rules and timings can change, so always confirm with the latest signage at the beach before letting your dog loose.

1. The Spit, Main Beach

One of the largest off-leash dog beaches on the Coast. Wide sand flats, calm river-side water, and plenty of space for fast-running dogs. Shaded picnic areas back from the sand for breaks. The ocean side has more surf and stronger currents, so most owners stick to the river side with younger or weaker swimmers.

2. Tallebudgera Off-Leash Dog Beach

Sits between the creek and the open ocean. The creek side is calm, shallow and protected, which makes it ideal for dogs that prefer paddling to surfing. Plenty of room for fetch on the sand. Free parking in the creek-side lot fills quickly on weekends.

3. Palm Beach Parklands

Off-leash dog beach plus a generous parkland area set back from the sand. The waves can be more energetic here than at Tallebudgera, but there are protected sections. BBQ facilities and the nearby Pirate Park if you have kids in tow.

4. Kurrawa Pratten Park, Broadbeach

Designated off-leash beach area in the heart of Broadbeach. Good size for running and playing, and you're walking distance to dog-friendly cafes and bars when you're done. Beach itself can get busy at weekends.

5. Budds Beach, Surfers Paradise

Quieter alternative to the main Surfers strip. Calm waters protected by the Nerang River entrance, suited to dogs that prefer a relaxed paddle to crashing waves. Shaded park area adjacent for picnics.

6. Southport Broadwater Parklands

Large parkland area with a designated off-leash section. Stunning views over the Broadwater, walking paths, and a swimming area where dogs can cool off in the calmer protected water. Good option for dogs that aren't strong ocean swimmers.

7. Biggera Waters Foreshore

Off-leash section on a sandy beach with very gentle waters. Foreshore path is good for longer walks. Less busy than the southern beaches, friendly mix of locals and dogs.

8. Miami Beach

Designated off-leash area in central Miami. Beach itself is wide and energetic, popular with locals. Plenty of dog-friendly cafes within walking distance for the post-beach coffee.

9. Bilinga Beach

Quieter southern Gold Coast option between Tugun and Coolangatta. Long stretches of open sand, gentle waves, fewer crowds. Good if your dog gets nervous with too much foot traffic.

10. Runaway Bay

Northern Gold Coast off-leash beach with calm waters and parkland for shaded breaks. Suits older dogs or those that prefer a gentler day out.

What to bring

  • Fresh water. Salt water dehydrates dogs faster than people realise. Bring a bottle and a collapsible bowl.
  • Sunscreen. Pet-safe formula on noses and ears, especially for short-coated or pink-skinned dogs.
  • Waste bags. Always.
  • Towel. A dedicated dog towel for the car ride home.
  • Awareness of currents. Not all dogs are strong swimmers. Watch for rips and keep weak swimmers in calm water only.

After the beach

Salt water and sand do real damage to coats over time. The salt strips natural oils and dries the skin out. Sand wedges deep into double coats and folds. A proper rinse-off (or a full bath if it's been a serious beach day) keeps coats healthy and stops the post-beach itch that drives dogs mad.
