Dachshund Grooming on the Gold Coast

The Dachshund coat: three varieties, one sausage-shaped grooming guide
Dachshunds are proof that big personality doesn't require big packaging. Bold, stubborn, loyal and convinced they're the alpha of every room, these elongated little legends have been Gold Coast favourites for decades. Their grooming needs depend entirely on which of the three coat varieties you've got.
Smooth-coated Dachshunds have a short, shiny, close-lying coat that sheds moderately and needs minimal professional grooming beyond regular baths, deshedding and skin checks. Long-haired Dachshunds have a soft, flowing coat with feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail that tangles readily and needs regular brushing and professional trimming. Wire-haired Dachshunds have a harsh, bristly outer coat with a softer undercoat, similar to many terrier breeds.
What a professional Dachshund groom involves
For smooth coats: warm bath with gentle shampoo, rubber curry brush for shedding management, blow dry, nail trim, ear cleaning and skin check. Straightforward but important, especially for skin health and shedding control.
For long-haired coats: thorough brush-out and detangle (feathering mats in humidity), warm bath with nourishing products, blow dry and brush to finish, trim and shape the feathering and feet, ear cleaning (long-haired Dachshunds have heavier ears that trap more moisture), nail trim.
For wire-haired coats: brush-out, bath, blow dry, clip and shape. We don't offer hand stripping at Pets Juicy. Wire-haired Dachshunds are traditionally hand-stripped to maintain the harsh coat texture, but for pet dogs a professional clip is practical and comfortable. If authentic wire coat texture matters to you, a specialist groomer who offers hand stripping would be the better fit.
Common Dachshund issues on the Gold Coast
Back sensitivity. Dachshunds' elongated spines make them prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). We handle every Dachshund with back awareness, supporting the spine properly during lifting, bathing and grooming. No jumping on or off tables. If your Dachshund has diagnosed back issues, let us know at booking.
Ear infections. Long, floppy ears that hang close to the ground collect dirt, moisture and debris. All three coat types share this vulnerability. We clean ears at every groom. Check weekly at home. Dry after swimming.
Matting in long-haired coats. The feathering on ears, chest and legs tangles in humidity. Regular brushing (every two to three days) is the only prevention.
Belly irritation. Dachshunds sit close to the ground. Their bellies contact every surface they lie on. Grass allergens, sand, cleaning products and certain garden mulches can cause contact dermatitis. Rinse the belly after outdoor play if your Dachshund is prone to irritation.
Grooming schedule
Smooth coat: every six to eight weeks. Long-haired: every five to six weeks (the feathering needs more frequent attention). Wire-haired: every six to eight weeks. All varieties benefit from regular ear cleaning and nail trims between grooms.
Home maintenance
Smooth coat: brush once a week with a rubber mitt. Long-haired: brush every two to three days with a slicker brush, focusing on the ear feathering and chest. Wire-haired: brush two to three times a week with a slicker brush. All varieties: check ears weekly, rinse after beach days, nails every four weeks.
Puppies and seniors
Dachshund puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. Handling them gently from an early age builds confidence and cooperation. Senior Dachshunds often have back issues that require careful, supportive handling on the grooming table. We never rush a senior Dachshund and always support their spine during every stage of the groom.
Seasonal grooming for Gold Coast Dachshunds
Summer. Long-haired Dachshunds need shorter styles for comfort in Gold Coast heat. All varieties need regular belly checks after grass play (their low clearance means maximum belly-to-ground contact). Rinse after beach days. Watch for hotspots on smooth coats from humidity.
Autumn. Smooth and wire coats shed more during the seasonal transition. A deshed helps manage it. Long-haired coats need consistent brushing as the humidity drops slowly.
Winter. Easiest season. All coat types are usually in their best condition. Groom every six to eight weeks.
Spring. Allergens increase. Dachshunds' low clearance means their bellies contact every allergen on the ground. Grass seeds are particularly dangerous for this breed because their belly height puts them right in the strike zone. Check thoroughly after walks through long grass.
At-home maintenance between grooms
Smooth coat: Brush once a week with a rubber mitt. Wipe belly after outdoor play if prone to contact irritation. Check between toes for seeds and debris. Nails every four weeks.
Long-haired coat: Brush every two to three days with a slicker brush. Focus on the ear feathering (it tangles first), chest and belly. Rinse after beach play. Comb through ear feathering daily during humid months.
Wire-haired coat: Brush two to three times a week with a slicker brush. The wire texture is lower-maintenance than long hair but still needs regular attention to prevent the undercoat from compacting.
All varieties: Check ears weekly (those long floppy ears need it). Rinse belly and paws after beach or park play. Keep nails trimmed, overgrown nails on a dog with a long spine affect gait and can worsen back strain.
The back: what every Dachshund groomer needs to know
Dachshunds' elongated spines make them the breed most prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This affects how we handle every single Dachshund that comes through our studio. We never allow a Dachshund to jump on or off the grooming table. We support the spine properly during lifting (one hand under the chest, one under the hindquarters, keeping the back level). We use non-slip surfaces. We don't twist or flex the spine during grooming. And if your Dachshund has diagnosed back problems, we adjust the entire session around their mobility and comfort.
This isn't optional or extra-careful handling, it's baseline for every Dachshund groom. Groomers who don't understand IVDD risk can cause serious injury to a breed that's already vulnerable. We take it seriously.
Grooming styles for Dachshunds
Smooth coat: No styling needed. The grooming focus is bath, deshed, skin care, ear cleaning and nail trim. A rubber curry brush at home once a week keeps shedding under control and the coat shiny.
Long-haired coat: Several style options. A natural trim keeps the feathering long and flowing with tidying limited to feet, sanitary area and shaping. A practical pet trim shortens the feathering for easier maintenance while keeping the Dachshund's distinctive look. A summer clip takes things shorter for Gold Coast heat. The feathering on the ears tangles first and fastest, so whichever style you choose, regular brushing of the ears is essential.
Wire-haired coat: Traditionally hand-stripped to maintain the harsh texture, but we don't offer hand stripping at Pets Juicy. For pet wire-haired Dachshunds, a professional clip produces a neat, comfortable result. The eyebrows and beard are shaped, the body is clipped to a manageable length, and the legs are tidied. If authentic wire coat texture matters to you, a specialist terrier groomer who offers hand stripping would be the better fit.
Seasonal grooming for Gold Coast Dachshunds
Summer (December to February). Long-haired Dachshunds benefit from a shorter trim in summer to reduce heat and sand trapping. All coat types need attention to belly irritation from hot ground and sand. Ear infections increase with humidity and swimming. Groom every five to six weeks for smooth coats, every four to five for long-haired.
Autumn (March to May). Smooth coats shed more as the coat transitions. Long-haired coats can be grown out again if they were clipped for summer. Good time to assess skin condition, especially the belly.
Winter (June to August). Easiest season. Less skin irritation, less shedding (smooth coats), less matting (long coats). Groom every six to eight weeks.
Spring (September to November). Shedding picks up for smooth coats. Allergens increase. Grass seeds become a hazard, especially for long-haired Dachshunds whose feathering catches everything. Check coat, ears and paws after walks through seeding grass.
At-home maintenance between grooms
Smooth coat: Brush once a week with a rubber mitt. Quick and easy. Rinse after beach days. Check ears weekly.
Long-haired coat: Brush every two to three days with a slicker brush. Focus on the ear feathering (tangles first), chest and belly. Rinse after salt water. Check for grass seeds in the feathering after walks.
Wire-haired coat: Brush two to three times a week with a slicker brush. The beard collects food and water, wipe after meals. Check ears weekly.
All types: Nail trim every four weeks. Ear check weekly (lift the flap, look, sniff). Belly check after outdoor play for sand rash or grass irritation. Be mindful of back strain when lifting your Dachshund onto and off surfaces, always support the full length of their spine.
