The Labrador coat: water-ready, shed-heavy and tougher than it looks
Labradors are the Gold Coast's ultimate beach dog. Loyal, happy, water-obsessed and built for the outdoor lifestyle that makes this part of Australia so good for dogs. That short, dense double coat is designed for swimming, working and getting into everything, but it sheds more than any other short-coated breed and needs proper professional care to stay healthy in the Gold Coast's humid, sandy, salty environment.
The Lab coat is a functional double layer. The outer coat is short, straight and dense with a slight oily feel that repels water. The undercoat is soft, thick and provides insulation against both heat and cold. Together they create a waterproof, weather-resistant system that's brilliant for a water-loving breed but also means year-round shedding with two explosive coat blows per year.
Labs come in three recognised colours (black, yellow and chocolate) and the coat texture is consistent across all three. Black Labs sometimes feel slightly smoother, yellow Labs can have a marginally softer undercoat, and chocolate Labs are occasionally reported to have more skin sensitivities, though the grooming approach doesn't change between colours.
Why Labradors need professional grooming
"But it's a short-haired dog?" We hear this constantly. Labs don't need haircuts, that's true. But they need serious coat and skin maintenance that goes well beyond a backyard hose-down.
A full Lab groom at Pets Juicy covers:
Pre-bath brush with a deshedding tool and rubber curry brush. The rubber brush lifts surface hair and stimulates the skin. The deshedding tool works through the dense undercoat to remove dead hair that's compacted against the skin. On a shedding Lab, the volume that comes out at this step is genuinely impressive for a "short-haired" dog.
Warm bath with coat-appropriate shampoo. Labs have naturally oily coats (it's part of the waterproofing), which means they can develop a strong doggy smell faster than many breeds. We use Melanie Newman products that clean effectively without stripping the natural oils. Over-washing or using harsh products makes the smell worse because the skin overproduces oil to compensate.
High-velocity blow dry and deshed. This is where the magic happens. The professional dryer blasts through the dense double coat, pushing out loose undercoat that no brush can fully reach. On a Lab in full coat-blow mode, the amount of hair that comes out is spectacular. The blow dry also dries the undercoat completely, which is critical because Labs that stay damp between the coat layers develop hotspots, especially in Gold Coast humidity.
Ear cleaning. Labs have heavy, floppy ears and they love swimming. This combination makes them one of the breeds most prone to ear infections. We clean ears thoroughly at every groom and flag anything that looks inflamed or smells off.
Nail trim. Every four to five weeks. Active Labs may wear nails down on hard surfaces but most still need trimming.
Full skin check. Hands over the entire body checking for lumps (Labs are prone to lipomas as they age), hotspots, ticks, rashes and anything unusual.
Deshedding: the most important Lab grooming service
Labradors shed. Constantly. Every day, all year, in quantities that seem physically impossible from one dog. Then twice a year (spring and autumn) they blow their entire undercoat in an event that fills bin bags and tests the limits of your vacuum cleaner's will to live.
Professional deshedding combines specialised bath products (formulated to loosen dead undercoat at the follicle), extended high-velocity blow-drying (which physically pushes loose hair out of the coat), and thorough brushing with a deshedding tool to remove everything that's left. The difference is dramatic and immediate. Most Lab owners notice significantly less hair on their furniture for two to three weeks after a professional deshed.
During coat-blowing season, a deshed every three to four weeks makes a real difference. Outside shedding season, one at every regular groom (every six to eight weeks) maintains the coat well.
Common Lab issues on the Gold Coast
Hotspots. Labradors are one of the breeds most prone to hotspots, and Gold Coast conditions make it worse. The dense undercoat holds moisture after swimming, humidity prevents complete drying, and the dog starts licking at a small irritation that becomes a large, raw, inflamed patch within hours. Prevention: dry your Lab thoroughly after every swim. Don't let them lie on bedding with a damp coat.
Ear infections. Heavy floppy ears plus a love of swimming equals chronic ear problems for many Labs. The ear canal stays warm and moist, bacteria thrive, and infections become recurring. Dry the ears after every swim. Check weekly for redness, smell or excess wax. Professional ear cleaning at every groom helps break the cycle.
Doggy smell. That oily, water-resistant coat means Labs can develop a strong odour faster than many breeds. Regular grooming with appropriate products manages it. Don't over-bathe at home with harsh products as this strips oils and actually worsens the smell cycle.
Lipomas. Fatty lumps under the skin that Labs develop increasingly as they age. Usually benign but should be monitored. We note any new lumps at every groom.
Sand compaction in the undercoat. Beach Labs accumulate sand deep in the dense undercoat where surface brushing can't reach it. Professional baths and blow-dries are the only reliable way to clear embedded sand.
Grooming schedule for Gold Coast Labs
Full professional groom: Every six to eight weeks year-round. Every four to six weeks during shedding season.
Professional deshed: At every groom, or as a standalone service mid-cycle during heavy coat blows.
At-home brushing: Twice a week with a rubber curry brush. Every other day during shedding season. Add a deshedding tool once a week during coat blows.
Post-swim care: Rinse with fresh water every time. Towel dry thoroughly, especially the chest, belly and ears. Don't let the undercoat air-dry in a humid environment.
Seasonal grooming
Summer. Peak swimming, peak hotspot risk, peak ear infection season. Groom every five to six weeks. Dry thoroughly after every water session. Ear checks after every swim.
Autumn. First coat blow. Book a professional deshed. Bump home brushing to daily during the heavy shedding weeks.
Winter. Calmest season. Shedding settles, the coat thickens, hotspots decrease. Every six to eight weeks is comfortable.
Spring. Heavy coat blow. Get ahead of it with a September deshed. Grass seeds become a hazard. Allergens increase and some Labs get itchier skin. Every four to six weeks.
Puppies and seniors
Lab puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. Labs are generally happy, social dogs and most take to grooming enthusiastically (they love the attention). Early exposure to ear cleaning is particularly important given the breed's lifelong ear vulnerability.
Senior Labs often develop thicker undercoats, more lipomas, drier skin and joint stiffness (the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia). We accommodate older Labs with shorter sessions, non-slip surfaces, gentle handling and breaks. If your senior Lab has arthritis or mobility issues, let us know at booking.
