The Beagle coat: short, dense and engineered for shedding and sniffing
Beagles are the Gold Coast's most cheerful detectives. They follow their nose everywhere, bay at suspicious leaves, and somehow find food that doesn't exist. That short, dense double coat is designed for all-weather fieldwork and it sheds far more than its length suggests.
The Beagle double coat has a short, weather-resistant outer layer and a denser undercoat that provides insulation. The outer coat repels water and dirt while the undercoat regulates temperature. Despite being short-haired, Beagles shed at a moderate-to-heavy level year-round, with bigger shedding peaks in spring and autumn. The hairs are short and spiky and they embed themselves in furniture and clothing with impressive persistence.
Beagles come in several colour combinations (tricolour, lemon and white, red and white, and others). Coat texture is consistent across all colours. The coat doesn't need styling or trimming, but it does need regular professional maintenance for shedding control, skin health and, most importantly, ear care.
Ear health is the single most important part of a Beagle groom. The breed is one of the most prone to chronic ear infections in the world, and the Gold Coast climate makes vigilance non-negotiable.
What a professional Beagle groom involves
A full Beagle groom at Pets Juicy includes:
- Pre-bath brush with a rubber curry brush and deshedding tool to lift loose undercoat
- Warm bath with gentle Melanie Newman salon shampoo, formulated to clean without stripping the coat's natural oils
- High-velocity blow dry and deshed. The step that makes the biggest difference for shedding at home, since it pushes out loose undercoat that home brushing can't reach
- Thorough ear cleaning. The most important part of a Beagle groom
- Nail trim and pad check
- Full skin and body check for lumps, hot spots, ticks or grass seeds
Ear health: the Beagle owner's number one priority
If there's one thing to remember about Beagle grooming, it's the ears. Those long, heavy, velvety ears that hang well below the jawline look beautiful but they create a warm, enclosed, low-airflow environment that's ideal for bacteria and yeast. Beagles are one of the breeds most prone to chronic, recurring ear infections, and on the Gold Coast where humidity is high and many Beagles swim, ear health requires constant vigilance.
Signs of an ear infection: redness inside the ear flap, a yeasty or foul smell, excessive dark or waxy discharge, head shaking, ear scratching, or tilting the head to one side. If you spot any of these, book a vet check promptly. Ear infections caught early are straightforward to treat. Left to progress, they become chronic, painful and expensive.
Reducing the risk. Check ears weekly (lift the flap, look inside and have a sniff). Dry the ear opening after every swim. Professional ear cleaning at every groom. These three simple habits can help reduce the risk of the infections Beagles are otherwise prone to.
Shedding: more than you'd expect
Beagles have a short, dense double coat that sheds year-round at a moderate-to-heavy level, with heavier periods in spring and autumn. For a medium-sized, short-coated dog, the volume of hair that comes off a Beagle is always more than new owners expect. The hairs are short, fine and embed themselves in upholstery and clothing with determination.
Regular brushing at home (twice a week with a rubber curry brush) removes loose hair before it reaches your furniture. Professional deshedding during grooms goes further. The high-velocity dryer pushes out loose undercoat that home brushing can't fully reach. Most owners notice a real difference in house hair after a professional deshed.
The Beagle smell is real, and it's not your fault
Beagles have a natural hound odour that comes from their skin oils. It's a breed trait and has nothing to do with how well you look after them. These oils originally helped protect the coat during long hunting days in all weather. On the Gold Coast, humidity can amplify the scent.
Regular professional grooming with the right products manages it effectively. The key is using shampoo that cleans without stripping the natural oils, because over-washing triggers the skin to produce even more oil, making the smell worse over time. We use Melanie Newman salon products at Pets Juicy that balance cleanliness with oil maintenance.
Seasonal grooming for Gold Coast Beagles
Summer (December to February). Peak outdoor activity means more dirt, sand and exposure to allergens. Ear infections increase with swimming and humidity. Ticks are active. Groom every six to eight weeks. Rinse after beach days. Dry ears after every swim. Watch for ticks after bush walks.
Autumn (March to May). Shedding increases as the coat transitions. A professional deshed helps manage the volume. Ear infections may continue from summer humidity. Ideal groom interval is every six to eight weeks.
Winter (June to August). The easiest season. Shedding settles, ear issues decrease with lower humidity, the coat handles cooler mornings well. Groom every six to eight weeks.
Spring (September to November). The second shedding peak. Allergens ramp up and grass seeds become a hazard around paws, ears and bellies. Ear infections return with increasing humidity. Groom every six to eight weeks.
At-home maintenance between grooms
Brush twice a week. A rubber curry brush or grooming mitt lifts loose hair, stimulates the skin and distributes natural oils. Five minutes covers the whole dog.
Check ears weekly. The single most important thing you can do between grooms. Lift the flap, look inside and have a sniff. Pale pink and odourless is healthy. Anything else needs attention.
Dry ears after swimming. Every time. Tip the head to each side, then gently dry the ear flap and canal opening with a soft cloth.
Rinse after beach play. Fresh water all over, paying attention to the belly, paws and ears.
Trim nails every four to five weeks. Beagle nails grow quickly and the breed's compact paw structure means overgrown nails affect their gait fast.
DON'T OVER-BATHE
Frequent bathing strips the protective oils and triggers more oil production, making the smell and skin issues worse. Stick to professional grooms every 6 to 8 weeks and quick rinses between if needed.
Common Beagle issues we manage on the Gold Coast
Ear infections. Chronic and recurring in many Beagles. Regular cleaning and drying is essential and can help reduce the risk.
Heavy shedding. More than expected for a short-coated breed. Regular brushing and professional deshedding manage it.
Hound odour. A breed trait rather than a care problem. The right shampoo and grooming schedule manage it.
Weight-related skin issues. Beagles are prone to weight gain, and overweight Beagles can develop skin fold irritation, especially around the neck and body.
Grass seeds and ticks. The Beagle nose-to-the-ground style of life means a lot of bush, grass and beach exposure. We do a full skin check at every groom.
Puppies and seniors
Beagle puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. Getting them comfortable with ear cleaning early is critical for this breed since they'll need it for life. Beagle puppies are curious, social and usually take to grooming well, though they may try to follow every interesting smell in the studio.
Senior Beagles may develop more ear issues, joint stiffness, weight gain (the breed loves food and slowing metabolism compounds this), and dental problems. We handle seniors gently with shorter sessions, raised tables where helpful, and extra attention to ear and skin checks. More on our senior dog grooming.

Had such a good experience at Pets Juicy. My dog Monty had the worst mats in his ears and I was honestly so stressed about it. Best haircut in 16 years for my spoodle
I’ve brought my two pups to Pet’s Juicy a few times now, and every visit has been such a positive experience. The team is incredibly gentle, caring, and clearly loves what they do! Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. Our big beautiful GSD loves this place. Hes very anxious at groomers but the whole vibe is just chill, welcoming and loving. He immediately relaxed and blended in well.

Highly recommend the Pets juicy team to look after your furry babies. I was so hesitant and nervous as I’d never had my dogs previously looked after but moving interstate and trying to take our family to theme parks left me no choice but to bite the bullet and try. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.

Amazing service! After being told by multiple groomers across the GC they weren’t taking on anymore large breed clients, I came across Pets Juicy who were more than happy to help. Both dogs groomed the next day and was better priced than I expected! Will definitely be using them from now on.
