The Rottweiler coat: tough, dense and built for protection
Rottweilers are powerful, confident dogs with a striking black-and-tan double coat that's as practical as the breed itself. Short, dense and weather-resistant, the Rottweiler coat doesn't need styling, but it does need consistent professional maintenance to stay healthy and manage the shedding that catches many first-time Rottie owners off guard.
The coat consists of a medium-length, flat-lying outer coat with a dense undercoat (more pronounced in cooler climates, slightly less dense in Gold Coast dogs). Rotties shed year-round at a moderate level and blow their undercoat twice a year. For a short-coated breed, the volume of loose hair is surprising.
What a professional Rottweiler groom involves
A full Rottweiler groom at Pets Juicy includes pre-bath brush with a rubber curry brush and deshedding tool, warm bath with gentle shampoo (Melanie Newman salon products), high-velocity blow dry and deshed (the most important step for removing loose undercoat), ear cleaning, nail trim (Rotties are heavy dogs and their nails can be thick and tough), full skin and body check for lumps, hotspots and ticks.
Rottweilers are large, powerful dogs and grooming them requires confidence, calm handling and proper equipment. We have experience with large breeds and we work efficiently to keep the session comfortable and positive.
Common Rottie issues on the Gold Coast
Shedding. More than expected for a short coat. Professional deshedding during grooms reduces house hair significantly.
Hotspots. The dense undercoat can trap moisture in Gold Coast humidity, especially after swimming. Thorough drying after water exposure prevents hotspots from forming.
Joint sensitivity. Rottweilers are prone to hip and elbow issues. Standing on the grooming table for extended periods can be uncomfortable, especially for older dogs. We provide non-slip surfaces and breaks as needed.
Skin lumps. Rotties develop lumps and bumps as they age, some benign (lipomas), some worth monitoring. We check at every groom and flag anything new.
Nail care. Heavy dogs with thick nails that can overgrow quickly. Regular trimming is essential for gait and joint health.
Grooming schedule
Every six to eight weeks for a full professional groom. Every four to five weeks during shedding season. Home brushing twice a week with a rubber curry brush. Rinse after salt water.
Temperament during grooming
Rottweilers that have been groomed regularly from puppyhood are usually calm, cooperative and trusting on the table. They're intelligent dogs that respond to confident, kind handling. Rotties that are new to grooming can be cautious and may need a few sessions to build trust. We take it at their pace and never force a nervous large-breed dog into a situation that could escalate.
Rottweiler puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. Building positive grooming habits while they're small and manageable makes a huge difference when they're 40+ kilograms of muscle and opinions.
Deshedding: the most valuable Rottie grooming service
Rottweilers shed more than most people expect from a short-coated breed. The dense undercoat drops hair year-round at a moderate level, with two heavier shedding events in spring and autumn. On a dog this size, even moderate shedding produces a noticeable amount of house hair.
Professional deshedding during grooms combines a deshedding bath, high-velocity blow drying (which pushes loose undercoat out from between the coat layers far more effectively than any brush), and thorough brushing with a deshedding tool. The result is a smooth, glossy coat that sheds noticeably less at home for two to three weeks.
During coat-blowing season, a deshed every four to five weeks keeps things manageable. Outside shedding season, one at every regular groom (six to eight weeks) maintains the coat well.
Seasonal grooming for Gold Coast Rottweilers
Summer. Hot weather and a dark coat means Rotties can overheat. Regular deshedding removes excess undercoat that traps heat against the body. Rinse after beach play. Ticks are at their most active, and the dense Rottie coat makes visual detection difficult. Check thoroughly by hand after bush walks.
Autumn. First coat blow. Book a deshed. Shedding increases noticeably as the summer undercoat drops. Bump home brushing to every other day during the heaviest weeks.
Winter. The coat thickens naturally. Shedding settles. Most Rotties are in great coat condition through winter. Groom every six to eight weeks.
Spring. Heavy coat blow. Get ahead of it with a September deshed. Grass seeds become a hazard. Allergens increase. Groom every five to six weeks through spring.
At-home maintenance
Brush twice a week with a rubber curry brush. During shedding season, every other day with a deshedding tool. Five minutes per session is enough for maintenance.
Rinse after salt water. Rotties' dark coats absorb heat from the sun, and salt residue on top of that makes skin uncomfortable. Fresh water rinse, towel dry, pay attention to the chest and belly.
Check for ticks after bush walks. Run your hands over the entire body. Focus on the head, neck, chest, armpits and between the toes. The dense coat makes visual checks unreliable.
Nails every four weeks. Rottweilers are heavy dogs. Overgrown nails on a 40+ kilogram dog change gait significantly and put strain on already-vulnerable joints. Don't let them get long.
Callus care. Check elbows and hocks. Keep dry, rough patches moisturised with paw balm or coconut oil to prevent cracking.
Puppies and seniors
Rottweiler puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. Building positive grooming habits while they're small (relatively speaking) makes a massive difference when they're a fully grown, powerful adult. A Rottie that's been groomed since puppyhood is calm and cooperative on the table. One coming in for the first time at two years old requires careful, patient introduction.
Senior Rottweilers often develop more joint stiffness (the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia), more lipomas, and drier skin. Standing for long periods becomes uncomfortable. We accommodate large senior dogs with floor-level grooming where needed, non-slip surfaces, gentle handling and breaks. If your senior Rottie has specific health issues, let us know at booking.
Seasonal grooming for Gold Coast Rottweilers
Summer (December to February). Peak outdoor activity and peak shedding overlap. The undercoat holds heat if not properly maintained through deshedding. Ticks are at their most active. Hotspots can develop if the coat stays damp after swimming. Groom every five to six weeks. Rinse after every swim. Check for ticks after every bush walk.
Autumn (March to May). First major coat blow as the summer undercoat drops. Shedding increases significantly. Book a professional deshed early in the season. Ticks remain active through autumn, so don't ease off on checking.
Winter (June to August). Calmest grooming season. Shedding settles, the coat thickens naturally. Groom every six to eight weeks. The coat is usually in its best condition through winter. Good time to monitor and moisturise any calluses on the elbows.
Spring (September to November). Heavy coat blow as the winter undercoat drops. Get ahead of it with a deshed in September. Grass seeds become a hazard for active, outdoor Rottweilers. Allergens increase and some dogs develop itchier skin. Groom every four to five weeks through spring.
At-home maintenance between grooms
Brush twice a week. Rubber curry brush for general maintenance. Deshedding tool once a week during shedding season. Firm, circular motions across the body following the direction of hair growth. Takes about five minutes on a cooperative Rottie.
Rinse after salt water. Fresh water every time. Pay attention to the chest, belly and paws. Salt dries the skin and leaves residue in the undercoat.
Check for ticks. Run your hands over the entire body after any time in bush, long grass or vegetated areas. The dense coat makes visual detection unreliable, so use your fingers. Focus on the head, neck, chest, armpits and between the toes.
Monitor calluses. Check elbows and hocks regularly. Apply paw balm or coconut oil to keep calluses soft and prevent cracking. If your Rottie sleeps on hard surfaces, consider providing a padded bed.
Check lumps regularly. Run your hands over your dog frequently and note any new bumps. Rotties develop lumps and lipomas as they age, most are benign but all should be monitored. We note anything new at every groom too.
Nails every four weeks. Heavy dogs with thick nails need regular trimming for joint health and proper gait. Don't let them get long enough to click on hard floors or splay the toes.

Building positive grooming habits while they're small and manageable makes a huge difference when they're 40+ kilograms of muscle and opinions. Senior Rottweilers often develop joint stiffness (the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia), more calluses, more lumps, and a denser undercoat that sheds more unevenly. Standing for long grooms can be uncomfortable. We accommodate senior Rotties with shorter sessions, non-slip padded surfaces, gentle handling and breaks when needed. If your older Rottweiler has arthritis, mobility issues or any health conditions, let us know at booking so we can plan the session around their comfort.
