Labradoodle Grooming Gold Coast

The Labradoodle coat: three coat types, one common problem

Labradoodles are one of the Gold Coast's most popular breeds, and for good reason. They're friendly, intelligent, active and come in a range of sizes and coat types that suit nearly every lifestyle. But every Labradoodle owner eventually learns the same lesson: that gorgeous coat needs work. More work than the breeder probably mentioned.

Labradoodles can inherit three distinct coat types. The fleece coat is the most common and most sought-after: soft, wavy to curly, low-shedding and feels like running your hand through a cloud. The wool coat is tighter, denser and more Poodle-like, with tight curls that mat close to the skin if not brushed regularly. The hair coat (least common in Australian-bred Labradoodles) is straighter, coarser and sheds more like a Labrador.

Regardless of type, the universal Labradoodle challenge is matting. Fleece and wool coats don't shed much, which sounds great until you realise that means dead hair stays trapped in the coat, wrapping around live hair and forming mats that tighten over time. On the Gold Coast, humidity accelerates this process. A coat that looks fine on Monday can have mats forming at the skin by Thursday if it hasn't been brushed.

Why Labradoodles need professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks

A full Labradoodle groom at Pets Juicy covers:

Full body assessment and brush-out. We go through the entire coat with a slicker brush and comb before the bath, checking for mats and skin issues. Labradoodles mat worst behind the ears, under the armpits, between the back legs, around the collar area and at the base of the tail. We work from the skin outward because surface brushing misses the mats forming underneath.

Warm bath with coat-type-appropriate products. Fleece coats need hydrating, smoothing products. Wool coats need products that help loosen the curl structure for easier detangling. We use Melanie Newman salon products and choose based on your Labradoodle's specific coat.

Professional blow dry and fluff. The blow dry is where a Labradoodle transforms from a wet, flat dog into the fluffy, bouncy, teddy bear look that makes the breed so appealing. A high-velocity dryer with a slicker brush lifts the coat, separates the curls and creates volume. Air-drying leaves the coat flat, tangled and damp at the roots. The professional dry also reveals hidden mats the bath may have concealed.

Clip or scissor to style. We'll discuss options at check-in based on your dog's coat type, your brushing routine and the time of year.

Face, feet, sanitary and ear detail. Round face shaping, clean paw pads, neat sanitary trim, and thorough ear cleaning. Labradoodles with floppy ears and ear canal hair growth (inherited from both parent breeds) are highly prone to ear infections, especially on the Gold Coast where swimming is frequent.

Nail trim. Every four to six weeks.

Grooming styles for Labradoodles

Teddy bear cut. Body at 2 to 3 centimetres, face rounded and soft, ears at a natural length. The signature Doodle look. Requires brushing every two to three days to stay mat-free. Popular with owners who want maximum fluff.

Lamb cut. Body kept shorter (1 to 2 centimetres) with legs left slightly longer and shaped for a fuller, rounded appearance. The contrast between the neat body and fluffy legs looks great on Labradoodles with wavy or curly coats. The longer legs do need regular brushing.

Puppy cut. Uniform length all over, usually 1 to 2 centimetres. Practical, easy to maintain, still cute. The best option for busy owners, active beach dogs, or anyone whose brushing routine is more aspirational than actual. Needs brushing two to three times a week.

Summer clip. Short all over for Gold Coast heat. Less coat, less sand, fewer mats, faster drying. Your Labradoodle will be more comfortable and you'll spend less time brushing. It grows back quickly.

Kennel cut. Very short all over (under half a centimetre). The most practical option for dogs that mat heavily, live active outdoor lifestyles, or whose owners prefer minimal maintenance. Low glamour, maximum comfort.

Ear health: a Labradoodle essential

Labradoodles inherit floppy ears from the Labrador side and ear canal hair growth from the Poodle side. This combination creates a warm, enclosed, hairy environment that traps moisture, wax and debris. Ear infections are one of the most common health issues in Labradoodles, and Gold Coast humidity and swimming make them significantly more frequent.

We clean ears at every groom, remove excess ear canal hair where needed, and flag any signs of infection. Between grooms, check ears weekly. After swimming, dry the ear opening immediately. These simple habits prevent a surprising proportion of the ear infections this breed is prone to.

The matting reality

If your Labradoodle arrives matted, we'll be honest about it. Tight mats against the skin can't be brushed out without causing pain. We'll recommend a reset clip to remove the mats humanely and start fresh. The coat grows back within a few weeks.

Prevention is straightforward: brush to the skin every two to three days, focus on the mat-prone zones (behind ears, armpits, collar area, between back legs, base of tail), and keep your grooming appointments consistent. A four-to-six-week schedule with regular home brushing keeps most Labradoodle coats in great condition.

Common Gold Coast Labradoodle issues

Matting from humidity. Gold Coast air holds moisture. Curly and wavy coats absorb it. Mats form faster here than in drier climates.

Sand compaction. Beach-loving Labradoodles trap sand deep in their curls. A surface brush won't reach it. Professional baths and blow-dries are the only reliable way to clear embedded sand.

Ear infections. The breed's number one grooming-related health issue. Prevention through regular cleaning and drying beats treatment every time.

Hotspots under heavy coat. Fleece and wool coats can trap moisture against the skin after swimming, creating bacterial hotspot conditions. Dry your Labradoodle thoroughly after water exposure.

Home brushing essentials

Every two to three days. Slicker brush and metal comb. Work in sections, from the skin outward. The comb is your truth-teller: if it glides through, the section is clear. If it catches, there's a tangle the brush missed.

After swimming or rain: Dry first, then brush once the coat is no longer damp. Brushing a wet Doodle coat stretches and damages the hair.

Trouble spots: Behind ears, armpits, collar area, between back legs, base of tail. Hit these every session even if you're short on time.

Seasonal grooming

Summer. Highest mat risk, highest ear infection risk. Consider a shorter style. Groom every four to five weeks. Rinse and dry ears after every swim.

Autumn. Humidity drops. Good time to grow the coat slightly longer if it was clipped for summer. Maintain ear care.

Winter. Easiest season. The coat is usually at its best. Every five to six weeks is comfortable.

Spring. Allergens increase, some Labradoodles get itchier skin. Grass seeds are a hazard in longer coats. Groom every four to five weeks.

Puppies and seniors

Labradoodle puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. The puppy coat transitions to the adult coat between 8 and 14 months, and this transition period often brings the first serious matting. Getting your puppy comfortable with grooming before the adult coat arrives makes that transition much easier.

Senior Labradoodles may develop drier coats and more sensitive skin. Ear issues often worsen with age. We accommodate older dogs with shorter sessions and gentler handling.
