Your Poodle is basically a four-legged fashion icon. But even icons need a little help looking their best, and that's where the right haircut steps in.
At Pets Juicy, we believe grooming isn't just about hygiene. It's about confidence. The kind that says "yes, I chase tennis balls, but I do it with flair." Whether your Poodle is more of a laidback lounge lizard or a full-blown diva, we've got a style to match their vibe at our Miami, Gold Coast studio.
Poodles come in three sizes (Toy, Miniature and Standard), but the coat is the same across all of them: dense, curly, single-layered and continuously growing. It doesn't shed in the traditional sense, which is why Poodles are considered hypoallergenic. But that continuously growing coat means regular professional grooming isn't optional. Without it, the curls matt, compact against the skin, and turn into a painful, tangled mess that nobody wants to deal with.
On the Gold Coast, humidity accelerates matting, salt water dries the curls, and beach sand works deep into the coat where surface brushing can't reach. A Poodle's grooming schedule here needs to be tighter than it might be in a drier climate.
The most popular Poodle haircut styles
Below are six of the most popular (and fabulous) Poodle haircuts we offer at Pets Juicy. Each one has its own mix of sass, practicality and cuteness. Let the doggy fashion parade begin.
The Teddy Bear Cut. The crowd favourite. The coat is trimmed to a uniform length all over (usually 2 to 3 centimetres), with the face rounded and soft rather than shaved clean. It gives your Poodle that irresistible, plush toy look without the high-maintenance demands of show styles. Practical for daily life, looks amazing in photos, and suits every size of Poodle from Toy to Standard. Needs brushing every two to three days and a professional groom every four to six weeks.
The Puppy Cut. Similar to the Teddy Bear but slightly shorter and more uniform. The coat is clipped to the same length everywhere, face included, for a clean, youthful look that's easy to maintain. This is the "I want my dog to look cute with minimum effort" option, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Dries fast after beach swims, mats less in humidity, and needs brushing two to three times a week. The most popular choice for active Gold Coast Poodle owners.
The Lamb Cut. Equal parts elegant and playful. The body coat is trimmed shorter (1 to 2 centimetres) while the legs are left slightly longer and shaped into soft, rounded columns. The face and tail are trimmed neatly but not shaved, giving a graceful, statuesque look that says "I'm gorgeous, but I also dig in the backyard." Those longer legs need regular brushing, but the overall effect is worth it. Think of it as the little black dress of Poodle grooming.
The Miami Cut. Also known as the Bikini Cut (how Gold Coast is that?), this playful look keeps the body short and tidy while leaving poms of fluff on the ankles and tail. It's a practical option for hot weather but still brings a healthy dose of pizzazz. Lower maintenance than you'd expect because the body is kept short, though the poms need brushing to stay round and fluffy.
The Kennel Cut. The no-nonsense option. Short all over, clean lines, maximum practicality. For Poodles that live active outdoor lives, swim regularly, or whose owners prefer to spend less time on coat maintenance. Fast drying, minimal matting, easy brushing. It might not win any style awards, but your dog will be comfortable, clean and happy.
The Continental or Show Cut. The one you see in dog shows. Shaved hindquarters, poms on the ankles and hips, a full mane on the chest and head, and a topknot. It's dramatic, eye-catching and unmistakably Poodle. It's also extremely high-maintenance, requiring daily brushing, regular professional grooming every three to four weeks, and a level of coat care commitment that most pet owners find unsustainable. We can do it, but we'll be honest about what's involved.
Poodle coat care fundamentals
Regardless of which style you choose, Poodle coat care on the Gold Coast comes down to a few non-negotiables:
Brushing is everything. The curly coat traps dead hair instead of shedding it, and without regular brushing, those trapped hairs form mats close to the skin. Brush to the skin with a slicker brush, not just the surface. Follow with a metal comb to check for hidden tangles. Every two to three days for longer styles, two to three times a week for shorter clips.
Professional grooming every four to six weeks. Poodle hair grows continuously. Without regular trimming, it loses shape, overgrows around the eyes and sanitary areas, and becomes increasingly difficult to manage. Four weeks keeps the style crisp. Six weeks is the maximum before things start getting messy.
Ear care is critical. Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, which traps moisture, wax and debris. The breed is prone to ear infections, and Gold Coast humidity makes it worse. We clean ears and manage excess ear hair at every groom. At home, check ears weekly and dry them after every swim.
Rinse after salt water. Salt dries the curls, makes them brittle and accelerates matting. Fresh water rinse after every ocean swim. A leave-in conditioner spray helps keep the coat hydrated between grooms.
The Poodle cross connection
Poodles aren't the only ones who benefit from these grooming styles. Their popular crossbreed cousins, Cavoodles, Labradoodles, Spoodles, Groodles and Moodles, all inherit some version of the Poodle coat and benefit from similar grooming approaches. If you've got a Poodle cross, the style recommendations above translate well, adjusted for the specific coat texture your dog inherited from their other parent breed.
Matting: the conversation nobody wants to have
If your Poodle arrives with significant matting, we'll be upfront about it. Tight mats against the skin can't be brushed out without causing pain and skin damage. In these cases, we recommend a reset clip: taking the coat shorter than your usual style to remove the mats humanely, then starting fresh. The coat grows back within weeks. With a regular grooming schedule and consistent brushing, it doesn't need to happen again.
We'd rather have that honest conversation at check-in than put your dog through a painful, stressful dematting session. That's not how we work.
Seasonal considerations for Gold Coast Poodles
Summer. Peak humidity, peak matting risk. Consider a shorter style for the hottest months. Ear infections increase with swimming frequency. Rinse and dry ears after every water session. Groom every four weeks to keep the coat manageable.
Autumn. Humidity starts dropping. A good time to grow the coat slightly longer if you were in a summer clip. Maintain ear care.
Winter. The easiest season. Lower humidity means the coat tangles less and stays in better condition. Groom every five to six weeks. A nourishing conditioner helps keep the curls soft and defined.
Spring. Allergens increase as everything flowers. Some Poodles develop itchier skin and more ear irritation in spring. Groom every four to five weeks. Watch for grass seeds in the coat after walks through long grass.
Puppies and seniors
Poodle puppies should start grooming from 12 to 14 weeks. The puppy coat is softer and curlier than the adult coat, and the transition (around 8 to 14 months) often brings the first serious matting experience. Getting your puppy comfortable with the bath, dryer, clippers, brushing and ear cleaning before the adult coat arrives makes that transition much smoother.
Senior Poodles may develop drier, thinner coats and more sensitive skin. Joint stiffness can make standing for long grooms uncomfortable, especially in Standard Poodles. Dental issues are common in smaller Poodles. We accommodate older dogs with shorter sessions, breaks, gentler handling and close attention to any changes in skin, coat or mobility.

Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.

Amazing service! After being told by multiple groomers across the GC they weren’t taking on anymore large breed clients, I came across Pets Juicy who were more than happy to help. Both dogs groomed the next day and was better priced than I expected! Will definitely be using them from now on.
