It doesn't shed in the traditional sense, which is why Poodles are considered hypoallergenic. But that continuously growing coat means regular professional grooming isn't optional. Without it, the curls matt, compact against the skin, and turn into a painful, tangled mess that nobody wants to deal with.

The Teddy Bear Cut. The crowd favourite. The coat is trimmed to a uniform length all over (usually 2 to 3 centimetres), with the face rounded and soft rather than shaved clean. It gives your Poodle that irresistible, plush toy look without the high-maintenance demands of show styles. Practical for daily life, looks amazing in photos, and suits every size of Poodle from Toy to Standard. Needs brushing every two to three days and a professional groom every four to six weeks.

The Puppy Cut. Similar to the Teddy Bear but slightly shorter and more uniform. The coat is clipped to the same length everywhere, face included, for a clean, youthful look that's easy to maintain. This is the "I want my dog to look cute with minimum effort" option, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Dries fast after beach swims, mats less in humidity, and needs brushing two to three times a week. The most popular choice for active Gold Coast Poodle owners.

The Lamb Cut. Equal parts elegant and playful. The body coat is trimmed shorter (1 to 2 centimetres) while the legs are left slightly longer and shaped into soft, rounded columns. Those longer legs need regular brushing, but the overall effect is worth it. Think of it as the little black dress of Poodle grooming.

It's dramatic, eye-catching and unmistakably Poodle. It's also extremely high-maintenance, requiring daily brushing, regular professional grooming every three to four weeks, and a level of coat care commitment that most pet owners find unsustainable. We can do it, but we'll be honest about what's involved.

Poodle coat care fundamentals

Regardless of which style you choose, Poodle coat care on the Gold Coast comes down to a few non-negotiables:

Brushing is everything. The curly coat traps dead hair instead of shedding it, and without regular brushing, those trapped hairs form mats close to the skin. Brush to the skin with a slicker brush, not just the surface. Follow with a metal comb to check for hidden tangles. Every two to three days for longer styles, two to three times a week for shorter clips.

Professional grooming every four to six weeks. Poodle hair grows continuously. Without regular trimming, it loses shape, overgrows around the eyes and sanitary areas, and becomes increasingly difficult to manage. Four weeks keeps the style crisp. Six weeks is the maximum before things start getting messy.

Ear care is critical. Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, which traps moisture, wax and debris. The breed is prone to ear infections, and Gold Coast humidity makes it worse. We clean ears and manage excess ear hair at every groom. At home, check ears weekly and dry them after every swim.

The Poodle cross connection

In these cases, we recommend a reset clip: taking the coat shorter than your usual style to remove the mats humanely, then starting fresh. The coat grows back within weeks. With a regular grooming schedule and consistent brushing, it doesn't need to happen again.

We'd rather have that honest conversation at check-in than put your dog through a painful, stressful dematting session. That's not how we work.

Seasonal considerations for Gold Coast Poodles

Summer. Peak humidity, peak matting risk. Consider a shorter style for the hottest months. Ear infections increase with swimming frequency. Rinse and dry ears after every water session. Groom every four weeks to keep the coat manageable.

Autumn. Humidity starts dropping. A good time to grow the coat slightly longer if you were in a summer clip. Maintain ear care.

Winter. The easiest season. Lower humidity means the coat tangles less and stays in better condition. Groom every five to six weeks. A nourishing conditioner helps keep the curls soft and defined.

Spring. Allergens increase as everything flowers. Some Poodles develop itchier skin and more ear irritation in spring. Groom every four to five weeks. Watch for grass seeds in the coat after walks through long grass.

Puppies and seniors

Getting your puppy comfortable with the bath, dryer, clippers, brushing and ear cleaning before the adult coat arrives makes that transition much smoother.

Senior Poodles may develop drier, thinner coats and more sensitive skin. Joint stiffness can make standing for long grooms uncomfortable, especially in Standard Poodles.
