Groodle Haircut Styles: The Teddy Bear Cut and More on the Gold Coast
The short answer: which Groodle haircut style suits your dog
The most popular Groodle haircut style on the Gold Coast is the teddy bear cut: body at 2 to 3 centimetres, a round scissored face and fluffy legs to match. If you want low effort, go shorter with a puppy cut or summer cut. If you want the big, cloudy, long-haired Groodle look, you can have it, but only if you brush to the skin almost every day. Everything else comes down to your dog's coat type and how much time you really have with a brush.

The teddy bear cut
The teddy bear cut is the Groodle look people picture when they buy the puppy. The body is clipped to an even 2 to 3 centimetres, the legs are left a touch fuller so they read as soft columns rather than sticks, and the whole thing is finished with scissors so nothing looks clipper-flat.
The face is where it earns its name. We scissor the head into a round shape, clear the hair from the corners of the eyes so your dog can actually see, and take the beard and muzzle in to match the round outline rather than leaving a long, dripping goatee. The ears are usually left at a natural length and blended into the head, or trimmed a little shorter if your dog's ears are always in the water bowl. The goal is a round, soft face with eyes you can find.
How long it lasts: a teddy bear cut looks crisp for about four weeks. By six weeks it has softened into a shaggier version of itself and the face is starting to creep over the eyes. Past eight weeks you are not maintaining a teddy bear any more, you are growing out of one. Four to six weeks between grooms keeps the shape without rebuilding it from scratch every visit. It needs a proper brush every two to three days, with extra attention behind the ears and under the legs.
Because the teddy bear is a scissored shape, we book it as a Style Groom. The scissor work is the part that takes the time and the part that makes it look right.
Long and fluffy: the honest version
A long, fluffy Groodle is a beautiful thing. It is also the style we see go wrong most often.
Long Groodle coat mats. Groodles barely shed, so dead hair stays in the coat and wraps around live hair until it knots at the skin. The longer the coat, the harder it is to brush all the way down. It can look fluffy on top while it felts against the skin underneath, and most owners only find out when we part it at the table.
Gold Coast humidity makes it worse. Curly coat soaks up moisture from the air, swells and tangles faster here than it would in a dry climate, and from November to March the window between a brushed coat and a matted one gets very short.
Beach and swimming make it worse again. A long coat that goes in the surf at Nobby Beach or Currumbin comes out holding salt, sand and a lot of water. Dry it in the car on the way home and it dries into clumps, with sand packed near the skin where a surface brush never reaches. Size matters too: on a standard Groodle a long coat is a lot of hair to dry, brush and cut, and every mat is multiplied by the size of the dog.
What it really takes: line brushing to the skin with a slicker brush and a metal comb most days, not a once-over on the surface. If the comb glides from skin to tip everywhere, the long coat is working. If it catches, you have a mat in progress. If daily brushing is not realistic in your house, a teddy bear cut gives you most of the look with half the work, and there is no shame in that.
Shorter Groodle cuts
The puppy cut
The puppy cut is one even length all over, usually 1 to 2 centimetres, face included, with a softer rounded finish around the head. It is the Groodle cut for busy owners and active beach dogs: quick to dry, less sand trapped near the skin, and manageable with two or three brushes a week. If you do not need the scissored teddy shape, an even clip like this can be booked as a Full Groom.
The short summer cut
Shorter again, close all over so the coat dries quickly after a swim and holds as little heat and humidity as possible. We usually leave a little more length on the face and tail so your Groodle still looks like a Groodle and not a startled whippet. It is the most practical choice from December to February and the easiest coat to live with. Most fleece and wool-coated Groodles carry a low-shedding, continuously growing coat that grows back evenly, so a short summer cut is not the problem it can be on a true double-coated breed.
The lamb cut
The lamb cut keeps the body short and the legs longer and shaped, a smart contrast that suits wavy and curly coats. The fuller legs collect burrs, grass seeds and sand on every walk, so they need brushing even when the body does not.
Face, ears, tail and feet
Whatever the body length, these four areas decide whether a Groodle looks groomed or just shorter.
Face. Round teddy, shorter and neater, or longer with a fuller beard. Whatever you choose, we clear the eyes, because hair poking into the eye is a comfort issue, not a style one. A shorter beard also stays cleaner and drier, which helps with that wet-beard smell after every drink.
Ears. Left long and blended, or trimmed shorter and rounded. Both parent breeds have drop ears, and the Poodle side adds hair growth inside the ear, so we clean the ears and tidy the hair around the opening at every groom whatever the style.
Tail. Most owners like a full, fluffy plume. If it keeps collecting burrs or knots at the base, trim it to match the body. We keep the back end neat either way.
Feet. We scissor the feet round and clear the hair between the pads. Overgrown pad hair makes dogs slip on tiles and picks up grass seeds, which are a genuine hazard in spring and summer here.
How each Groodle coat type holds a cut
Two Groodles can get the identical cut and walk out looking quite different. That is the coat, not the groomer.
Fleece coat. Soft, loose waves and the most common Groodle coat. It holds a teddy bear cut beautifully and gives that plush, soft-toy finish. It mats at a steady, predictable rate if you keep up the brushing.
Wool coat. Tight, dense, Poodle-style curl. It scissors into a very crisp shape and holds it well, but it mats fastest and hides those mats close to the skin. Wool-coated Groodles do best on the shorter side of the teddy bear range or in a puppy cut, especially through summer.
Flat or improper coat. Less common. Shorter on the face and legs, closer to a Golden Retriever coat, with no real Doodle beard or eyebrows. It will not hold a round teddy face the way a fleece or wool coat does, and it sheds more. For these dogs we keep the coat tidy and comfortable rather than trying to force a shape it cannot hold, and a good wash and brush-out does a lot of the work.

Mini, medium or standard: time on the table
A scissored teddy bear cut usually takes 2 to 3 hours, and a standard Groodle with a thick coat sits at the top of that range. An even clip with no scissored styling usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. A mini Groodle in a regular routine is the quickest of the lot. The biggest variable is not size, it is condition: a brushed coat dries and cuts cleanly, while a tangled one adds time at every stage. We price by size and confirm at check-in, so if your dog sits between sizes, book the larger one.
When a matted coat has to come off short
If your Groodle arrives with tight mats at the skin, we will not try to brush them out. Dematting a pelted coat means dragging a brush through knots that are pulling on the skin for an hour or more. It hurts, it can leave the skin red and broken underneath, and it teaches a dog to dread the grooming table for life. We will not do that to a dog in pain, whatever the style you were hoping for.
Instead we clip under the mats cleanly and start again. Your Groodle goes home shorter than planned but comfortable, and we will show you where the mats were, usually behind the ears, in the armpits, under the collar and between the back legs. The coat grows back, and with brushing and regular appointments the teddy bear comes back with it.
What to tell your groomer
"A bit off all over" means something different to everyone. This helps.
- Bring a photo, ideally of a Groodle with a coat like your dog's. A photo of a fleece-coated Groodle will not translate exactly onto a tight wool coat, and we will tell you honestly what is achievable.
- Say what you want long and what you want short: the face, ears, legs and tail can all be different lengths from the body.
- Tell us how often your dog swims and how often you really brush. It changes our recommendation more than anything else.
- Mention any mats, sore spots or skin issues you have noticed so we can plan the time.

What is the difference between a teddy bear cut and a puppy cut?
A puppy cut is one even, shorter length all over, usually 1 to 2 centimetres. A teddy bear cut is a little longer, with fuller legs and a hand-scissored round face. The puppy cut is easier to maintain, the teddy bear is more styled.
How long does a Groodle teddy bear cut last?
It looks sharp for about four weeks and starts losing its shape by six. Booking every four to six weeks keeps it looking like a teddy bear rather than a shaggy one.
Can my Groodle have long hair on the Gold Coast?
Yes, if you can brush to the skin most days and dry the coat properly after every swim. Humidity, salt and sand make long Groodle coats mat quickly here, so many owners go long through winter and shorter for summer.
Why did my Groodle come home shorter than I asked for?
Usually because the coat was matted at the skin. We clip under tight mats rather than brush them out painfully, then let the coat grow back healthy. We will always explain why at pick-up.

Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
