Cavoodle Haircut Styles: Teddy Bear, Puppy, Lamb and Summer Cuts on the Gold Coast
The short answer: which Cavoodle cut should you choose?
The main Cavoodle haircut styles we clip at our Miami studio on the Gold Coast are the teddy bear cut, the puppy cut, the lamb cut and the short summer cut, plus a longer fluffy look for owners who love brushing. For most Gold Coast Cavoodles, a puppy cut or a short summer cut is the most comfortable choice from October to April, when humidity, sand and swimming make longer coats mat fast. The teddy bear cut is the classic look, and it suits dogs whose owners brush every couple of days.
The right cut comes down to coat type, beach and pool time, and how much brushing really happens at your place. Below is each style in plain words you can repeat at the counter. Cavoodle grooming styles and haircuts, explained
Each style is a starting point. We adjust length to your dog's coat and shape, and the face, ears, tail and feet can be mixed and matched across any of them.
The teddy bear cut
The signature Cavoodle look. The body is left at a medium length, usually around 2 to 3 centimetres, and the legs are scissored to blend into the body so the whole dog looks soft and round. The face is shaped into a full, round teddy face, and the ears are usually left longer.
What to ask for: "A teddy bear cut, medium length on the body, round face, legs blended in." It looks gorgeous for weeks if the coat is brushed through every two to three days. If brushing happens once a week, the teddy bear cut is where mats hide, especially behind the ears, under the collar and in the armpits.
The puppy cut
One even length all over, usually around 1 to 2 centimetres, face and legs included. This is the cut we recommend most to active Gold Coast families, because it dries quickly after the beach, sheds sand easily and holds up well between visits.
What to ask for: "A puppy cut, same length all over, about a centimetre or two." If you want a little more softness on the face, ask for a puppy cut on the body with a rounder face.
The lamb cut
Short and neat on the body, with the legs left longer and shaped into soft, fluffy columns. It suits Cavoodles with a good curl or a full wave, and it borrows from the Poodle playbook, as our Poodle haircut styles guide shows.
What to ask for: "A lamb cut, short body, longer fluffy legs." Be ready to brush those legs often. Leg hair picks up wet grass, sand and burrs, and it tangles faster than the body.
The short summer cut
Shorter than a puppy cut on the body, often under a centimetre, with a little more left on the ears, tail and face so your dog still looks like themselves. It is the most practical choice for a Gold Coast summer, for swimmers, and for dogs prone to matting. We recommend leaving a small amount of coat rather than clipping to bare skin, because it protects lighter-skinned dogs from sun and from scrapes.
What to ask for: "A short summer cut on the body, but keep the face round and a bit of length on the ears and tail."
The longer fluffy look
Longer than a teddy bear cut, mostly scissored for shape rather than clipped. Beautiful when kept up, and the highest-maintenance option here. A longer Cavoodle coat needs a full brush and comb to the skin every day or two, a proper dry after every swim or bath, and regular professional visits. Without that, it mats underneath while still looking fine on top.
Face, ears, tail and feet: the details that change the look
Two Cavoodles in the same body cut can look completely different depending on these choices.
Face. A round teddy face keeps fuller hair on the cheeks and muzzle, scissored into a circle, with the eyes cleared so your dog can see. A shorter muzzle trims the hair around the mouth closer, which suits dogs who come up from the water bowl dripping, or who get food and tear staining around the beard. You can have a round head with a shorter muzzle, which many owners love.
Ears. Longer ears keep the Cavalier look. Shorter, tidied ears are easier to keep clean and dry for swimmers, and they mat less at the base.
Tail. A full, feathery plume or a trimmed tail that matches the body. Beach dogs and dogs who sit in the sand all afternoon often do better with a shorter tail, because the underside of a long tail collects sand and mats quickly.
Feet. Round teddy feet are scissored into soft circles. Neat, tight feet are trimmed closer to the paw. Either way, we clear the hair between the pads, which helps with grip on tiles and keeps grass seeds and sand from lodging. Coat type: why the same cut looks different on every Cavoodle
Cavoodles get their coat from a mix of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle genes, and the mix is different in every dog.
Fleece coat. Soft, loose waves and a bit of spring. It holds almost any style well. It is lovely in a teddy bear cut, but the soft texture tangles easily in humidity.
Wool coat. Tight, dense, Poodle-style curls. This is the curly Cavoodle coat, and it holds a scissored shape beautifully, which makes it ideal for lamb and teddy bear cuts. It also mats the fastest and closest to the skin, so curly Cavoodles often live happiest in a puppy or summer cut through the warmer months.
Flat or straight coat. Closer to the Cavalier side, silky and lying flat. It will not hold a round, fluffy shape the way a curly coat does, so a teddy bear cut can look a little limp. A neat, even trim that follows the coat's natural fall usually looks best, with tidy feet and a cleaned-up face.
Many Cavoodles have more than one texture, curlier on the back and straighter on the ears or legs. We look at the coat at check-in and tell you what will hold.
Toy vs miniature Cavoodles
Toy Cavoodles have smaller faces and finer legs, so a very short clip can make them look thin and leggy. We usually leave a little more length on the head and legs to keep the proportions sweet. For a nervous little one, a puppy cut that is quicker to finish can also mean less time on the table.
Miniature Cavoodles carry more coat, so there is more to brush and more places for mats to hide. A teddy bear cut on a bigger miniature looks great, but expect home brushing to take longer.
Which cuts suit Gold Coast summer, beach days and swimming
From about October to April, the Gold Coast is warm and humid, and plenty of Cavoodles here spend time at the beach, the creek or the pool. Every swim leaves salt and sand in the coat, and a damp, longer coat that sits against the skin in humid air is where matting starts. If your weekends revolve around our dog-friendly Gold Coast beaches, plan the cut to match.
For swimmers and beach regulars, the short summer cut and the puppy cut are the clear winners. They rinse clean, dry quickly and leave far fewer hiding spots for sand. The teddy bear cut works for a swimmer only if the coat is rinsed in fresh water and dried properly after every swim.
A shorter summer cut is not a punishment
Plenty of owners worry a short cut will make their Cavoodle look like a drowned rat. A short cut on a Cavoodle is a comfort choice, not a sad one. Most Cavoodle coats are the continuously growing, low-shedding type from the Poodle side, not the dense double coat you might have read about in the shaving debate (our guide to shaving double-coated dogs in summer explains the difference). A shorter Cavoodle coat dries faster, holds less heat and moisture against the skin, and is far easier to keep mat-free. It also grows back steadily, so you can let it grow out again as the weather cools.
How long each cut lasts before the next visit
- Longer fluffy look: about 4 weeks before the coat underneath needs attention.
- Teddy bear cut: 4 to 6 weeks, at the shorter end in summer.
- Lamb cut: 4 to 5 weeks, mainly because the legs tangle.
- Puppy cut: 5 to 6 weeks.
- Short summer cut: up to 6 weeks for the body, though some owners book a quick face and feet tidy in between.

What to tell your groomer (and why a photo helps)
"Short" means something different to everyone. Bring a photo, ideally of a Cavoodle with a coat like yours, then tell us:
- The body length you want, in centimetres if you can, or "short, medium or longer."
- Round teddy face or a shorter muzzle.
- Long ears or shorter, tidier ears.
- A full tail or a trimmed tail.
- Round teddy feet or neat, tight feet.
- How often your dog swims, and how often you really brush.
That last one matters most. Be honest. It helps us pick a length that stays comfortable until the next visit.
A quick word on photos online
Most Cavoodle haircut pictures you see online are taken minutes after a groom, when the coat has just been blow-dried straight and fluffed to its full height. That finish is real, but it relaxes over the next few days, and a wet Cavoodle can look half the size. Curly coats tighten back up, and wavy coats settle. If you love the fluffy finish, the best way to keep it is regular brushing and a proper dry after baths and swims. If your Cavoodle comes home and goes straight in the pool, expect a different dog by dinner time.
If the coat is matted when you arrive, we will talk it through before we start. Tight mats cannot be brushed out kindly, so the safest option is often a shorter reset cut, then building back to your favourite style over the next few grooms.

Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10

This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
