What Is a Hygiene Clip for Dogs? (Sanitary Trim Explained)
What is a hygiene clip for dogs?
A hygiene clip (also called a sanitary trim or hygiene trim) is a quick, targeted tidy of the parts of your dog that get grubby fastest: the sanitary area, the bum, the paw pads and the hair around the eyes, with no full body clip. At Pets Juicy in Miami on the Gold Coast you can book it as a quick dry tidy of about 20 to 40 minutes, or add a warm bath and blow dry, and it is the easiest way to keep a fluffy dog clean and comfortable between full grooms.
What a hygiene clip includes
Every groomer does it a little differently, so here is exactly what our Dog Hygiene Cut covers:
- Face and eye tidy: hair trimmed back from the eyes so your dog can see properly, plus a light tidy around the muzzle and beard.
- Paw pad trim: hair clipped from between and under the pads.
- Sanitary tidy: a clean trim around the sanitary area for hygiene and comfort.
- Bum tidy: a clean up around the back end so less ends up stuck where it shouldn't.
- A light face wipe with dog-safe wipes if needed.
On its own it is a dry trim with no body clip. Want your dog washed too? Pick a PLUS Wash & Dry option when you book and we add a warm bath and blow dry. If you want a specific extra area tidied, tell us when you book and we will plan for it. Nervous about clippers near the face? We switch to scissors around the eyes for dogs who prefer it.
Why it matters more on the Gold Coast
Humidity. Long hair around the back end and between the legs stays damp for hours in a Gold Coast summer. Damp hair holds smell, and it is a big reason some dogs smell even after a bath. Shorter hair in those zones dries faster and stays fresher.
Sand in paw fur. Beach dogs from Burleigh Heads to Currumbin carry half the coastline home between their toes. Long pad hair traps sand and salt, and on tiles and floorboards it turns your dog into a toddler on roller skates. Trimmed pads mean better grip and less grit in the house.
Grass seeds. From late spring through summer we pull grass seeds out of paw fur and the fluff around the back legs on the table in Miami. Long, feathery hair catches them. Shorter hair gives them less to grab and makes them easier to spot after a walk.
Flystrike. It is not common in well-kept pet dogs, but it is real. The MSD Veterinary Manual notes that matted hair soaked in urine or faeces quickly attracts the flies that cause it, and that the coat should be kept clean and not allowed to mat. A tidy sanitary area and bum is the simplest way to stay well clear, especially for older or less mobile dogs in warm weather.
Which dogs benefit most
Oodles. Cavoodles, Groodles and Spoodles grow fast, fluffy hair right where you don't want it. The eyes and the back end are usually the first things to get messy, often weeks before the rest of the coat needs a cut.
Long-coated small breeds. Shih Tzus and Maltese grow hair over their eyes and carry plenty of it around the bum. A hygiene clip keeps them comfortable without losing the length you love.
Cavaliers and Border Collies. These are feathered breeds that never need a full clip, but the feathering around the back legs, bottom and paws catches everything. Cavalier paws in particular grow long tufts that hide the pads completely. For a Border Collie, a sanitary trim tidies the trousers and pads while the double coat stays as nature built it.
Older dogs. Seniors often struggle to keep themselves clean, and long sessions on the table get tiring. A short, targeted visit keeps them hygienic without asking too much of their joints.
Any dog between full grooms. If your dog is on a regular grooming cycle and looks fine everywhere except the eyes, paws and back end, this is the visit for you.
How often to book a hygiene clip
Most dogs on a four to six week full groom cycle do best with one hygiene clip at the halfway point. Dogs with fast-growing hair or messy back ends can come in every two to three weeks if they need it. Not sure where your dog fits? Puppies can have one from around four months once they are comfortable being handled. For very young pups, start with a gentle puppy introduction first.
Hygiene clip vs full groom
A full groom is the whole package: warm bath, blow dry, a clip or scissor cut all over, ears, nails and a hygiene tidy built in. A hygiene clip is just the tidy, without the body work, and the bath is optional.
Think of it like a fringe trim between proper haircuts. It does not replace the full groom. Skip full grooms for too long and the coat starts to mat, and no amount of tidying the edges fixes that. Used together, though, the two work well: the full groom resets the coat, and the hygiene clip keeps the high-traffic zones under control until the next one.
What not to do at home with scissors
We get it. The fringe is in their eyes, the scissors are in the drawer, and how hard can it be? Here is what we would ask you to avoid:
- Pointed scissors near the eyes. One head turn and the tip is where you really don't want it.
- Scissoring the sanitary area. The skin there is thin, loose and folds as your dog moves, so it is easy to catch skin along with hair.
- Cutting into a mat. Mats sit tight against the skin, and scissors slide straight under them. If it is matted, leave it for us.
- Digging between the pads. The webbing between toes is delicate, and a wriggly paw plus sharp blades is a bad mix.
- Trimming a dog who is already stressed. If they are pulling away, stop. A bad experience at home can make the next grooming visit harder too.
What you can do at home: brush the back end and feathering a couple of times a week, wipe around the eyes with a damp cloth, rinse sand and salt out of paws after the beach, and check between the toes for seeds after walks.
How it fits into your grooming routine
The simplest rhythm for most fluffy Gold Coast dogs is full groom, hygiene clip about halfway, then full groom again. Your dog stays clean, can see where they are going and has grip on the floor the whole way through, and the full groom gets a coat that has been looked after in between.

Is a hygiene clip the same as a sanitary trim?
Yes. Hygiene clip, hygiene trim, hygiene cut and sanitary trim all describe the same tidy of the sanitary area, bum, paws and face. Our version is called the Dog Hygiene Cut.
Does a hygiene clip include a bath?
Only if you add one. On its own it is a dry trim with a light face wipe if needed. Choose a PLUS Wash & Dry option when you book and we add a warm bath and blow dry. If your dog needs a full clip as well, book a full groom instead.
How long does a hygiene clip take?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes at our Miami studio for the tidy on its own, depending on your dog and how much needs tidying. Adding a wash and dry takes longer.
Does a full groom include a hygiene trim?
Yes. A full groom includes a hygiene tidy along with the bath, blow dry, cut, ears and nails. The standalone hygiene clip is for the weeks in between.

Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.

Amazing service! After being told by multiple groomers across the GC they weren’t taking on anymore large breed clients, I came across Pets Juicy who were more than happy to help. Both dogs groomed the next day and was better priced than I expected! Will definitely be using them from now on.
