What Is a Deshed? Dog Deshedding Treatment Explained
What is a deshed treatment for dogs?
A deshed, short for a deshedding treatment, is a bath and blow-out designed to pull the dead undercoat out of your dog's coat in one session, so it lands in our bin instead of on your couch. At our Miami studio on the Gold Coast that means a deshedding shampoo that loosens the undercoat at the skin, a high-velocity blow-out, then undercoat rake and slicker work. Your dog's coat length stays exactly the same. What changes is the amount of loose fluff hiding underneath it, and how much of it ends up on your floors over the next few weeks.
If you're more interested in why your dog is shedding so much in the first place, our guide to dog shedding that's out of control covers the causes. This one is about the treatment itself: what happens on the table, who it suits, and how often a Gold Coast dog needs one.
What happens during a deshed, step by step
A deshed isn't a regular bath with a bit of extra brushing. Every step is set up to loosen dead coat and then move it out, in four stages.
1. Drop-off check
A quick chat at drop-off about how heavy the shedding is, any skin sensitivities and any matting, so your groomer knows where the dense patches and tangles are hiding before the water goes on.
2. Deshedding shampoo and conditioner
We use Melanie Newman, an Australian salon range, and its deshedding formula is worked right down to the skin and given time to sit. Longer and double coats then get a conditioner, which helps the dryer and rake glide through without pulling. If your dog has sensitive skin, tell us at booking and we'll swap to a gentler or medicated wash and still do the deshed work.
3. High-velocity blow-out
This is where most of the hair comes off. A temperature-controlled, high-velocity dryer pushes air down to the root and blows loose undercoat out of the coat in clouds. It's loud, so we go at your dog's pace.
4. Undercoat rake and finishing brush
Once the coat is dry, an undercoat rake and slicker work through the dense areas (neck, britches, tail, behind the ears) to lift what the dryer loosened, without cutting or damaging the topcoat.
Nails, an ear clean and a sanitary and paw tidy are included. A short coat deshed usually takes 90 minutes to two hours. A long or double coat takes two to three hours, and a big dog in the middle of a seasonal blow can take longer. We'd rather do it properly once than half-do it and see you back in a fortnight.

Book a deshedWhich dogs need a deshed (and which don't)
A deshed is for dogs with an undercoat, or a coat that drops hair constantly. These are the two groups we see most.
Double coats
A soft, dense undercoat under longer guard hairs. On the Gold Coast that's the Border Collie, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd and the little but mighty Pomeranian. These book in as a long coat deshed.
Short coats that shed hard
Short doesn't mean low-shed. The Labrador, Kelpie, Australian Cattle Dog and Rottweiler all carry a short, dense undercoat, and the Staffy has a single coat that still sheds fine, spiky hairs into every fabric you own. These book in as a short coat deshed.
Who a deshed isn't for
Poodles and poodle crosses (Cavoodles, Groodles, Spoodles, Labradoodles) have a low-shedding coat that keeps growing and tangles instead of falling out. A deshed won't help them, and bathing and blow-drying a tangled curly coat tends to tighten the knots rather than release them. They need a full groom with a clip or scissor finish. The same goes for any dog whose coat is matted close to the skin: severe matting has to be clipped out humanely before a deshed is possible.
How much hair comes out, and what to expect after
More than you'd believe. For a double coat in full blow, the pile on the studio floor can look like a second dog. Short coats come away with less volume, but it's the same fine hair that would otherwise be woven into your car seats.
When you pick up, your dog will look the same length but feel lighter, softer and noticeably less fluffy under your hand. Expect a lot less hair around the house for the next four to six weeks. Healthy dogs never stop shedding completely, so anyone promising that is selling something. A deshed brings it back to a level you can live with.
There's a comfort side too. Dead undercoat packed against the skin traps heat and moisture, and in Gold Coast humidity that's a fast track to hot spots and that musty dog smell. Clearing it lets air reach the skin and helps the coat do its job of keeping your dog cool.
How often Gold Coast dogs need a deshed
For most heavy shedders, every six to eight weeks year-round, tightening to every four to six weeks during the coat blows. Our climate shifts the timing a little.
Spring (September to November). The big one. Winter undercoat drops out ahead of summer. Book a deshed in early spring and plan on two or three visits about four weeks apart for heavy double coats.
Summer (December to February). Humidity keeps coats shedding and stops them drying properly. Regular deshedding keeps the undercoat thin enough for skin to breathe.
Autumn (March to May). The second blow, as the coat thickens again for winter. Another good window for a deshed.
Winter (June to August). Usually the quietest stretch, so most dogs can sit at the longer end of the range.
Beach dogs from Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Mermaid Beach often sit at the shorter end, because salt and sand caught in the undercoat add to the build-up.
Deshed vs shaving
Shaving a double-coated dog to beat the heat feels logical and usually backfires. The topcoat protects against sun and helps regulate temperature, and once it's shaved the coat can grow back patchy, uneven or fuzzy. A deshed removes the heat-trapping undercoat and leaves the protective topcoat alone, which is why we deshed double coats rather than shave them. The full explanation is in our guide to shaving double-coated dogs in a Gold Coast summer.
Brushing at home between visits
A deshed resets the coat. Brushing at home keeps it that way for longer.
- Brush daily during spring and autumn blows, and three or four times a week the rest of the year.
- Double coats: an undercoat rake followed by a slicker brush. Work in sections, right down to the skin, not just across the top.
- Short coats: a rubber curry brush or grooming mitt, in firm circles. Most Labs and Staffies treat it as a massage.
- Rinse with fresh water after the beach and dry thoroughly. Salt and sand left in the undercoat clump the loose hair and irritate skin.
- Not sure which brush suits your dog? Ask at pick-up and we'll show you.
When shedding is a vet issue, not a grooming one
Normal shedding is even, seasonal and leaves healthy coat behind. Book a vet check if you notice:
- Bald patches or thinning in one area rather than all over.
- Red, broken, scabby or flaky skin under the hair loss.
- Constant scratching, licking or chewing.
- Hot spots, a strong smell or greasy coat.
- A sudden change in how much your dog sheds, with no change in season.
- A dull, brittle coat alongside changes in weight, energy or appetite.
Allergies, skin infections, parasites and hormonal issues such as thyroid problems can all show up as hair loss. We're not vets and we never diagnose, but our groomers check skin all over during every deshed and we'll tell you at pick-up if something looks worth a vet visit.
FAQs
What does deshed mean in dog grooming?
It means removing the loose, dead undercoat your dog is ready to drop. In practice that's a deshedding shampoo, a high-velocity blow-out and undercoat rake work. It doesn't shorten the coat.
Does a deshed hurt?
No. Done properly it only removes hair that's already loose, and the rake works through the undercoat without cutting or pulling the topcoat. Most dogs find the brushing relaxing. The dryer is loud, so nervous dogs get a slower pace and extra settling time.
Will a deshed stop my dog shedding?
No healthy dog stops shedding. A deshed clears the backlog, so you'll see far less hair around the house for the next four to six weeks.
Can puppies have a deshed?
From around six months, once the adult coat is coming through. Younger puppies are better off starting with our Puppy Introduction Groom.
Is a deshed the same as a groom?
No. A deshed is a bath service focused on removing undercoat. A full groom includes clipping or scissoring to change the coat's length or shape, which is what poodle crosses and long, tangle-prone coats need.

Five stars from the people holding the leads
Rated 5.0 on Google (opens in a new tab)We took our two toy poodles in for grooming today and couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the moment we walked in, the team was warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do.
They took the time to listen and treated our boys with such care and patience throughout and they came out looking absolutely beautiful! Perfect cuts, soft coats, and so happy & relaxed.
It’s obvious they genuinely care about the dogs, not just the end result. The attention to detail and level of professionalism really stood out. We’ve already rebooked, will definitely be coming back regularly and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable, high-quality groomer.
Thanks so much guys!
Lots of love from Lenny & Boo 🐕 🐕
OBSESSED
Got my senior queen Lady (husky x GSD) groomed here when her regular groomers couldn’t fit her in (they would often cancel as well due to her size and hair type). Pets Juicy did an incredible job - Lady came back happy, smelling fresh and well de-shedded. Really happy with the service and kindness of the staff here, this will be the new go-to spot for our dogs. Thank you for being so accommodating to bigger dogs, which are often seen as a chore by many places. I can see based on reviews you have many larger regulars. Thank you team!
Excellent service and care
HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR COCKER SPANIEL OWNERS 🤍
Had such a good experience at Pets Juicy. My dog Monty had the worst mats in his ears and I was honestly so stressed about it. The team were so patient and gentle with him, especially because he’s a bit silly and crazy They really took their time and made sure he was comfortable, and did an amazing job. I honestly wish I took before photos of how matted his ears were because the difference is crazy. So grateful for how kind they were with him. Definitely recommend!
Great job on my mini groodle Coco
Such an amazing place and team. The environment was very calming and relaxing for our dog. It was his first ever professional groom and wow, he looked fantastic. From booking to confirmation to reminder to collection was absolutely brilliant. Our dog didn’t want to leave at the end of his groom leaving with a big smile on his face and one very happy one at that. We have found our forever groomers for our large dog!!
Thanks Pets Juicy
Best haircut in 16 years for my spoodle
I’ve brought my two pups to Pet’s Juicy a few times now, and every visit has been such a positive experience. The team is incredibly gentle, caring, and clearly loves what they do! My dogs are always excited when we arrive! Their grooms are beautifully done, and they come home smelling amazing and happy every time. I feel completely at ease leaving them in such capable, loving, kind hands. Highly recommend!
Always amazing & professional a great team
Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. Also the staff was very accommodating, booking was easy and prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back!
Awesome groom - our Labradoodle looks so handsome!
Our big beautiful GSD loves this place. Hes very anxious at groomers but the whole vibe is just chill, welcoming and loving. He immediately relaxed and blended in well.
I struggle to take him in public to dog parks as he gets very unhappy, but id happily leave him here as long as needed. Well managed and run.
Love this place .

Highly recommend the Pets juicy team to look after your furry babies. I was so hesitant and nervous as I’d never had my dogs previously looked after but moving interstate and trying to take our family to theme parks left me no choice but to bite the bullet and try. I’m so glad I came across these guys. They put my mind at ease. My dogs were happy to go each day (they went for 3 days). I was updated on the first day with texts and photos to put my nerves at ease. Thank you for such a pleasant experience. Can’t recommend these guys enough. Thank you.
Teddy loves pets juicy!!!
We absolutely love this place! Odin and Scooby always come home happy, relaxed, and looking amazing after their grooming sessions. The team truly cares for the dogs as if they were their own, and I feel so comfortable leaving them here for daycare knowing they’re in safe hands. Grooming is always done perfectly—clean, tidy, and they smell incredible! Most importantly, both dogs actually get excited when we arrive, which says it all. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a professional and loving groomer/daycare.
Great service and great results!
I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.
Extremely affordable, Kind and Professional experience.
Beautiful results, affordable for all.
My 1 year old labradoodle Bryson had his first full groom this morning and couldn't feel more comfortable and pleased with this service. Very impressed with how patient and helpful Shane was. Bryson wasn't the easiest puppy to groom but with the guidance and advice given, I have no doubt it will get essier and he will be less nervous each time. Have definitely found our new grooming service! Very happy, thank you so much! 🙂
Great service and love the free bandana
Extremely happy after collecting our Husky Sasha from his first visit. We really appreciate the extra time and care taken to de-fluff our adored fur ball and especially impressed we were not charged extra for the additional time taken. Have already started recommending you and looking forward to seeing you again next month! Thanks again from Sasha and the Spencer Family 🩷🩷🩷
