Dog Shedding Out of Control? Here’s How Grooming Can Help
Share
Finding fur on your clothes, your couch, and somehow inside your fridge? Shedding is one of the most common things Gold Coast dog owners ask us about. The combination of heat, humidity and seasonal coat changes means a lot of dogs lose hair by the handful here. The good news: regular professional grooming makes a real difference, and there's no need to shave anything bald.
Why shedding happens
Shedding is normal. It's how dogs get rid of old or damaged hair so new coat can grow. A few factors can ramp it up:
Seasonal coat blow
Double-coated breeds blow their coat in spring and autumn. The undercoat thickens for winter and thins for summer, which means major coat shifts twice a year. During those windows, daily brushing is realistic, not optional.
Heat and humidity
Warmer weather triggers shedding as dogs try to cool down. Gold Coast humidity stays high for months at a time, so what feels like constant shedding is often just the local climate pushing the coat to keep adjusting.
Breed
Some breeds shed more by nature. Labradors, Border Collies, Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Kelpies and Jack Russells are all heavy shedders. Mixed-breed dogs with these in their lineage usually shed similarly.
Stress or health issues
Sudden or extreme hair loss can signal stress, poor diet, or medical problems like allergies, thyroid issues or skin infections. If your dog's shedding pattern changes drastically without an obvious reason, talk to your vet.
Can shedding be stopped?
No. But it can be managed properly so it doesn't take over your home. That's where regular grooming earns its keep.
How professional grooming helps
Deshedding treatments
We use specialist tools (Furminator-style undercoat rakes and high-velocity dryers) and techniques designed to lift loose undercoat without damaging the topcoat. Done regularly, a deshed treatment removes weeks of dead coat in a single session.
Plant-based, skin-friendly shampoos
We wash with Melanie Newman Salon Essentials. Plant-based, cruelty-free, sulphate-free, and pH balanced for canine skin. The shampoo loosens dead hair while nourishing the skin underneath, which means less shedding from the source rather than just less hair on the floor.

Calm, low-volume studio in Miami. Patient handling for every breed and coat type.
Book a groomProper blow-drying
A professional blow-dry isn't just for the look. It lifts more loose fur out after bathing, which means less of that fur ending up on your couch over the next two weeks. Our adjustable, lower-volume dryers strike the balance between effective and not-frightening.
The right brush for the coat
Different coats need different tools. We know which brush, comb or rake suits your dog's specific coat type and use it to lift trapped hair, prevent mats and stimulate healthy regrowth. We're happy to show you the right brush to use at home, too.
Skin checks while we go
Our groomers notice when shedding looks abnormal. Dry patches, bald spots, redness, hot spots, or sudden coat thinning all get flagged so you can follow up with your vet if needed.
Shed control is about routine
Most heavy-shedding dogs benefit from a fortnightly to monthly visit, especially during peak shedding seasons. A regular schedule means:
- Less fur on floors, furniture and clothes.
- Healthier, shinier coats.
- Fewer skin problems.
- More comfortable dogs.
Between grooms: what helps at home
- Brush daily during coat blow seasons (spring and autumn), three or four times a week the rest of the year.
- Use a slicker brush or undercoat rake suited to your dog's coat. Ask us if you're not sure which.
- Rinse off with fresh water after the beach to remove salt and sand before they dry into the coat.
- Keep your dog cool. Overheating increases shedding.
- Vacuum often. There's no shortcut around this one.
