Can You Take Your Dog to Hinze Dam? Advancetown and Mount Nathan Guide
The short answer
Yes, you can take your dog to Hinze Dam, but only on a lead and only in part of it. Seqwater, which runs the dam, says dogs on leashes are permitted only in the Day Use Area: Pocket Park, Picnic Parkland and Spillway Lookout. Dogs can't go in the lake, on the foreshore or on the boat ramps, and Seqwater says dogs aren't permitted in Waterside Park. Around the dam it's even tighter. Nerang National Park bans dogs, council lists no off-leash areas in Advancetown or Mount Nathan, and several local reserves are dog prohibited. Here's exactly where your dog can go, where it can't, and where to let them run afterwards.

Why your dog can't swim in the lake
Hinze Dam is a drinking water supply, so the rule isn't Seqwater being fussy. Seqwater says dog waste that isn't disposed of properly can wash into its lakes and cause bacterial contamination, and that's why dogs are banned from the water, the foreshore and the boat ramps. In a 2022 reminder to dog owners, Seqwater said dog on leash areas are only at a few approved lakes, Hinze among them, so it's worth keeping on the right side of the rules. For calm water where your dog can actually swim, our Broadwater dog swims guide has the council-approved spots.
Coffee at the dam: ask first
The View Social, the cafe at Hinze Dam (the old viewcafe.com.au address now forwards to its website), says on its own website that SEQ Water doesn't permit domestic pets from entering Hinze Dam. That doesn't match Seqwater's current dog page, which allows dogs on a lead in the Day Use Area, but it's the cafe's stated position, so we wouldn't take your dog in without asking first. See The View Social's about page.
Nerang National Park: no dogs
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says dogs and other pets aren't allowed in national parks, and on-the-spot fines apply. That covers every track in Nerang National Park near the dam. You can drive through a national park with your dog on gazetted roads, but the dog must stay in the car and you can't stop at day-use areas, lookouts or any other sites. See QPWS's dogs and pets page.
Advancetown and Mount Nathan: council parks
City of Gold Coast's dog areas data lists no off-leash areas in Advancetown, Mount Nathan, Gilston or Clagiraba. A few reserves are dog prohibited:
- Parkway Drive Reserve, 46 Beechmont Road, Advancetown: council's page says it's a dog prohibited area
- Mount Nathan Reserve, 227 Clagiraba Road, Mount Nathan: council's Mount Nathan Reserve page says the reserve is a dog prohibited area
- Parma Court Reserve, Mount Nathan, and Coolbunbin Creek Reserve, King Parrot Reserve and Beechmont Conservation Area in Clagiraba, which council's dog areas data lists as no dogs allowed
Everywhere else in public, City of Gold Coast's rule applies, as its park pages put it: dogs must always be on a lead unless in a signed designated off-leash area, and dogs are prohibited in children's playground areas.
Where to let them run nearby
North Road Beechmont Parkland, 51 North Road, Lower Beechmont. A council off-leash area up the hill at Lower Beechmont. Council describes it as a designated off-leash dog area where dogs can exercise and socialise under effective control, with trees to relax under. Council doesn't say it's fenced, so it suits dogs with good recall. See council's North Road Beechmont Parkland page.
Nerang. Back down the hill, Nerang has several council off-leash areas. Our Nerang, Highland Park and Carrara guide has the details, and our fenced dog parks guide lists every fenced council park on the northern Gold Coast.

A day out: how we'd do it
- Go early. The Day Use Area opens at 5.30am from September to April, and the morning is the coolest part of a hinterland day.
- Walk the dog areas on the lead: Picnic Parkland, Pocket Park and Spillway Lookout.
- Picnic in a dog area. Seqwater lists picnic and barbecue facilities at Pocket Park and Picnic Parkland.
- Finish with a run at North Road Beechmont Parkland or one of the Nerang off-leash parks on the way home.
Pubs and restaurants nearby
We checked The Beechmont Hotel on Nerang-Murwillumbah Road and Barrow at Mount Nathan. Neither states a dog policy on its own website, so we're not listing them as dog friendly. Call ahead if you'd like to bring your dog.
Ticks, snakes and heat
This is bush country, so ticks and snakes are a real risk, and summer days get hot:
- Ticks: RSPCA Queensland says tick numbers rise during tick season, October to March, and that the most common sign of paralysis tick poisoning is paralysis of the hind legs. Check your dog all over after every visit.
- Snakes: the Animal Welfare League Queensland advises keeping dogs on a lead near long grass, leaf litter, water or rock piles, and sticking to trails. A snake bite is a vet emergency.
- Heat: go early or late, carry water for your dog, and never leave them in the car, even with the windows down.
Our paralysis ticks and snakes guide covers what to look for and what to do. The nearest emergency hospital options are in our Gold Coast vets guide.
