Canungra With Your Dog: Parks, Stays and What's Off Limits

Green paddocks rolling up to a mountain range under a cloudy sky

The short version

Canungra is the little hinterland village on the way up to O'Reilly's and the Green Mountains, and it's a lovely day out with a dog if you know where the lines are. It's in the Scenic Rim, so Scenic Rim Regional Council's dog rules apply, not the Gold Coast's. Council has a fenced off-leash area at Moriarty Park in town, two stays nearby publish their dog terms, and the local vet opens six days a week. The big catch is up the mountain: Lamington National Park bans dogs on every track, and O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards doesn't allow pets. Here's the honest version, checked against council, park service and venue websites.

Last checked 28/10/2026. Every park rule here comes from the council or park authority's own pages, every venue from its own website or socials plus its Google listing, and each fact was checked a second time before we published.

Scenic Rim's dog rules

Under Scenic Rim's animal management local law, a dog in a public place must be under the effective control of someone. On a day out, that usually means:

  • held on an appropriate lead by someone physically able to control it
  • or, inside a dog off-leash area, supervised by someone who can control it by voice command

Separately, the local law says a dog on heat must not be in a public place at all.

The fines are real. In a 25 May 2026 release, Scenic Rim Regional Council said recent changes to Queensland's Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 include on-the-spot fines of more than $830 for failing to keep a dog under effective control in a public place. See council's responsible pet ownership release.

Moriarty Park: Canungra's fenced off-leash area

Scenic Rim Regional Council lists Moriarty Park on Coburg Road, Canungra, as one of its fenced off-leash areas for dogs. Council's page doesn't list facilities, so bring water and bags. It's the spot to let your dog stretch their legs before or after the drive. See council's off-leash areas page.

Heading home via the mountain? Council's two fenced off-leash areas on Tamborine Mountain are Youngman Family Park on Giessman Drive and Staffsmith Park on the corner of Southport Avenue and Central Avenue. Our Tamborine Mountain guide has the rest.

Lamington National Park: no dogs

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says dogs and other pets aren't allowed in national parks, and on-the-spot fines apply. That covers every walk in Lamington National Park, at O'Reilly's in the Green Mountains section and beyond. You can drive through a national park with your dog on gazetted roads, but QPWS says the dog must stay in the vehicle and you can't stop at day-use areas, lookouts or any other sites. See QPWS's dogs and pets page.

One name trap: the West Canungra Creek circuit sounds like a walk in town, but QPWS says it starts from the Green Mountains day-use area in Lamington National Park, so it's dogs out. And never leave a dog in a parked car while you do a rainforest walk. Cars heat up fast, even in the mountains.

Eating and drinking with a dog

O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards: no pets. The vineyard's own FAQ says it doesn't allow guests to bring domestic pets, although guide dogs are welcome. See the vineyard's FAQs.

Canungra Hotel: call first. The pub on Kidston Street has a beer garden, and a couple of customer reviews on its own website mention bringing a dog to the outdoor area. The hotel doesn't publish a dog policy, though, so we're not calling it dog friendly. Ring ahead and ask.

Cafes. We couldn't find a dog policy from any Canungra cafe on its own website or socials, so ask at the counter before you settle in with your dog.

Ticks and snakes

Canungra is surrounded by bush and farmland. RSPCA Queensland says tick season runs from October to March and that paralysis of the hind legs is the most common sign of tick poisoning, so check your dog all over when you get home. The Animal Welfare League Queensland advises keeping dogs on a lead near long grass, leaf litter, water or rock piles. Our paralysis ticks and snakes guide has the full checklist.
