Dog-Friendly Helensvale: Off-Leash Parks, Vets and Stays
The Helensvale basics
Helensvale is quietly one of the best-served suburbs on the northern Gold Coast for off-leash space. Council lists six designated off-leash areas across the suburb, from a big open reserve next to the community centre to a lake loop and a sports park beside the aquatic centre, with a fully fenced dog park just over the border in Hope Island. Add a vet in Helensvale Square and a holiday park that takes dogs on every site, and Helensvale is an easy place to live, or stay, with a dog.
Park rules are checked against City of Gold Coast park pages, and venues and stays were checked on 27/10/2026. If a sign on the day disagrees, the sign wins.
Careel Reserve: the big one
Council describes Careel Reserve as a large designated off-leash area with ample space for dogs to run under effective control. It sits next to the Helensvale Community Centre, so it's easy to find and easy to park. Council doesn't describe it as fenced, so it suits dogs with solid recall. See council's Careel Reserve page.
- Where: 2-6 Careel Close, Helensvale
- Off-leash: large designated area
Salix Reserve East
Salix Reserve is split in two by Mildura Drive. The western side, Salix Reserve, is on-lead with a shaded playground. Cross the road to Salix Reserve East and it's a signed off-leash area. There's a small fenced playground at the Fairhaven Court entrance to the east side, and dogs aren't allowed in it. See council's Salix Reserve page.
- Where: Salix Reserve, 19 Ridgevale Drive, with the off-leash east side across Mildura Drive
- Off-leash: Salix Reserve East only
Samford Court Reserve
Also on Mildura Drive, Samford Court Reserve is a designated off-leash area where dogs can exercise and socialise, with open green space, a picnic shelter and a playground. See council's Samford Court Reserve page.
- Where: 163 Mildura Drive, Helensvale
Discovery Park and Helensvale Rugby Park
Both sit on Discovery Drive and both have designated off-leash areas. Discovery Park is a recreation park with a skate park, picnic spots and a playground. Helensvale Rugby Park is a big sports park next to the Helensvale Aquatic Centre, good for a run or a walk through before the dog gets its turn. Check council's sports field closures before game days. See council's Discovery Park and Helensvale Rugby Park pages.
- Discovery Park: 84 Discovery Drive, Helensvale
- Helensvale Rugby Park: 239 Discovery Drive, Helensvale
Mangrove Jack Park: lake loop, with roadworks
Mangrove Jack Park has a 1 km loop around a small lake and a designated off-leash area. Heads-up: council says major construction for the Coomera Connector Stage 1 North project is underway in the Hope Island station work area in the park, and a large section of the park is now a construction site, so expect detours and fencing. There are no toilets at the playground. See council's Mangrove Jack Park page.
Village Green: on a lead
Village Green on Discovery Drive is a quiet on-lead park with toilets and a playground at the Tamworth Drive end. Handy for a sniff, not for a run.
A fenced run nearby: Saltwater Park
For a fully fenced option with agility gear and a spot for a swim, Saltwater Park on Helensvale Road is just over the line in Hope Island. It's covered in our Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove guide.
Coffee and a beer
Helensvale has plenty of cafes, but we couldn't find one that says in its own words that dogs are welcome, and we'd rather list none than guess. For a beer with the dog, Runaway Bay Tavern's beer garden welcomes dogs, and for coffee, Ripples in Runaway Bay is listed as pet friendly by dining guides, so ask first. Both are in our Runaway Bay, Hollywell and Paradise Point guide.

Worth knowing: Gold Coast Tourist Parks' own pet policy says only its Jacobs Well and Kirra Beach parks take dogs, so the Main Beach and Broadwater tourist parks are a no. For the city-wide list, see our pet friendly accommodation guide and dog-friendly caravan parks guide.

Ticks, grass seeds and heat
Bushy suburban parks are paralysis tick country. Check your dog's head, neck, ears, armpits and between the toes after every walk, and look for grass seeds in paws and ears in the warmer months. On hot days, walk early or late, as footpaths heat up fast. Our ticks and snakes guide covers what to look for.
