Dog Friendly Lakes and Creek Swims on the Gold Coast (2026 Guide)

Freshwater only here, the three legal off-leash ocean beaches have their own guide. These are the lakes and creeks where dogs can legally swim, checked in July 2026, with the no-dog boundaries called out because a couple of these spots ban dogs from the exact bit everyone wants to swim in.
When the surf's too big or you just want a calmer paddle, a lake or creek swim is the move. The Gold Coast has some good ones, though a fair few of the "lakes" are brackish canal lakes rather than mountain-fresh, and the creek spots have strict boundaries. Here's where to go, and where the line is.
Pizzey Park lake, Miami
Our home swim. The lake on the western side of Pizzey Park has calm water and an off-leash area right there, a few minutes from the studio. Easy, social and shady, a good one for a dog still working out whether it likes swimming.
Tallebudgera Dog Island, Elanora
The fenced off-leash dog island at Eddie Kornhauser Reserve sits in a tidal lake, with sandy entries into the surrounding ponds for a swim. Agility gear on land, water on all sides. Watch the tide, it's tidal water, so depth changes through the day.
Saltwater Park lagoon, Hope Island
Up north, the lagoon beside Saltwater Creek gives the fenced dog park a proper swim, with a rope strung to the fence for safety. Obey the no-dog signage on the parts that are off-limits, and you've got one of the best swim-and-play combos on the Coast.
Cabana off-leash area, Botanic Gardens, Benowa
The Cabana off-leash area at the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens has a waterside spot where dogs can swim, while the gardens themselves stay on-leash. A pretty, shaded option. Note it's a canal-fed lake, so it's brackish rather than fresh.
Albert Park lake, Broadbeach Waters
A lake with a beach-style entry and an off-leash designation, close to Broadbeach, where a swim is very much part of the deal. Flat, easy and unfenced, so recall matters. Another brackish canal lake rather than freshwater.
Currumbin Creek, Currumbin (northern side)
The northern side of Currumbin Creek is off-leash and a favourite for a calm estuary swim. Important boundary: dogs are banned from the southern human swimming zone, so keep to the north side and read the signs.
Tallebudgera Creek, Tallebudgera
At the creek mouth by Ronnie Long Park, the off-leash zone runs between the creek entrance and lifeguard tower 16. The famous calm swimming spot up near the bridge bans dogs, and rangers patrol it, so swim your dog in the marked section only.
The creek spots that ban dogs
Two things to keep you out of trouble. First, the postcard rock pools and waterfalls in the hinterland, Currumbin Rock Pools, Cedar Creek Falls, the Springbrook cascades and Natural Bridge, are all national park, where dogs are banned. Second, on the tidal creeks, watch the incoming tide, calm water can get deep and pull faster than it looks. Bring fresh drinking water for the dog too, as salt and brackish water upsets stomachs.
Wet dog, happy dog, smelly car. Creek and canal swims leave salt, silt and pond funk in the coat. Bring them into our Miami studio for a warm bath and blow dry and we'll sort it properly.
