The Surfers Paradise, Bundall, Chevron Island and Isle of Capri basics

Surfers Paradise isn't the first place people picture with a dog, but swing back from the beach to the river side and it gets very good. Franquin Park is one whole off-leash park with a sandy spot to swim, Gladys Moncrieff Park in Bundall is off-leash by the water, and Chevron Island has its own off-leash park. Three of the city's best-known hotels take dogs too, which makes Surfers an easy weekend away with the dog.

Park rules are checked against City of Gold Coast park pages, and venues and stays were checked on 27/10/2026. If a sign on the day disagrees, the sign wins.

Franquin Park, Surfers Paradise: off-leash with a swim

Council says the entire park is a designated off-leash area, and there's a small sandy spot near the water where dogs can splash and swim. It's a leafy park full of big old trees, overlooking Girung Island and Adams Basin. Toilets are next door at Lex Bell Park, and parking is on Gibraltar Drive. See council's Franquin Park page.

  • Where: The Corso, Surfers Paradise, with parking on Gibraltar Drive
  • Off-leash: the whole park, with a sandy swim spot
  • Toilets: in neighbouring Lex Bell Park

Gladys Moncrieff Park, Bundall

A shady, palm-lined park overlooking Moomba Basin, and council lists it as a designated off-leash area. There are steps down towards the water, unisex toilets on site and parking along Boomerang Crescent and Allawah Street. It's right beside the Sorrento shops, so you can grab supplies on the way. Dogs stay out of the playground. See council's Gladys Moncrieff Park page.

Chevron Island Park

A small local park with shade trees, walking paths and an off-leash dog area, on Thomas Drive. Handy if you're staying on the island. See council's Chevron Island Park page.

On-lead parks and the beach

Lionel Perry Park on the Nerang River, opposite Chevron Island, has a riverside deck towards Appel Park and public toilets, and dogs are on a lead. Roma Park on Isle of Capri is on-lead too. On the beach, the stretch of Surfers Paradise from Tower 33 at Clifford Street to Tower 37 at Higman Street is a dog prohibited area at all times, and dogs must stay 200 metres from the flags. Our Gold Coast dog beaches guide has the full rules.

Coffee and a beer

Surfers has hundreds of cafes and bars, but we couldn't verify one in these suburbs that says in its own words that dogs are welcome, so we're not listing one. Elk Espresso and Banksy Bar & Kitchen in Broadbeach both welcome dogs, and they're in our Broadbeach guide.

Rinse your dog with fresh water after a swim, before the salt dries, working into the belly, armpits, paws and ears. Check for ticks after every walk, paralysis ticks included. Our ticks and snakes guide covers what to look for.
