Dog grooming in Varsity Lakes

Varsity Lakes is built around water and walking paths, which makes it a very good place to own a dog and a slightly demanding one to keep a coat in. Pets Juicy is about twelve minutes east in Miami, doing calm grooming and warm washing Monday to Saturday, with structured daycare Tuesday to Saturday.

Built for Varsity Lakes dogs

Varsity Lakes runs on its paths. The Lake Orr circuit is the spine of the suburb and it is busy with dogs from first light, the Bond campus edges are quiet and shaded, and the newer estates back off Scottsdale have brought a whole wave of first-time dog owners with them.

That last group is a big part of who we see, and the most common thing we end up explaining is brushing. A Cavoodle or Groodle puppy has a soft coat that is easy to manage right up until the adult coat comes through, usually somewhere between eight and twelve months. That is when the matting starts, and it starts underneath where it does not show. A lot of first grooms with us are a rescue job on a coat that looked fine from the top.

The lake dogs have the other problem. Fresh water and silt rather than salt, which sounds gentler and behaves much the same once it dries into an undercoat. Retrievers and Collies who swim the lake regularly need the wash and blow dry between grooms as much as any beach dog does.

What happens when you book

  1. You book online, not over the phone. Pick the service, size and time. Afterpay is available at checkout. Online-only booking is deliberate: it means nobody is juggling a phone while holding a nervous whippet.
  2. You tell us about your dog. Anxious, arthritic, hates the dryer, went badly somewhere else last time. All useful. None of it is a problem, and knowing in advance changes how we run the appointment.
  3. Same groomer, every time. Shane heads up the team with Risa, Callie and Anna. We keep dogs with the same stylist wherever the diary allows, because a dog that recognises the person holding the clippers is a dog that stands still.
  4. We work at the dog's pace. No stacked appointments, no rushing a senior dog through a dryer because the next one is waiting. If a dog needs a break, it gets one.
  5. You get an honest update. If we found a hot spot, a grass seed, an ear that needs a vet or matting that meant we had to go shorter than you wanted, we tell you at pick-up and we tell you why.

The breeds we see most from Varsity Lakes

Around Varsity Lakes we see a lot of Cavoodles, Groodles, Spoodles, Labradors, Border Collies and Staffies, with the doodle crosses well ahead on numbers thanks to the newer estates.

Curly and wavy crosses are the ones where brushing between visits genuinely decides whether you get the haircut you asked for. Our breed notes explain what each coat needs: Cavoodle grooming, Groodle grooming, Spoodle grooming, Border Collie grooming and the full breed library.

We do not offer hand stripping. If your dog has a wire coat that needs it, we will say so rather than clip it.

Lake Orr, the path network and the coat that comes back

Varsity is one of the easiest suburbs on the Coast to walk a dog in, and the lake is the centre of it.

The Lake Orr circuit gives you a long, flat, connected loop that works for a young Labrador and an arthritic old Staffy alike. It is also the reason we see so much silt in undercoats out here. Lake water leaves fine sediment that settles below the guard hairs and compacts as it dries, and a hose off at home does not reach it.

Grass seed matters here too through spring and summer, particularly on the verges of the newer estates where the grass is longer. We check pads, toes, armpits and ears on every dog as standard.

Planning something bigger? Our verified guides cover dog friendly walks, dog friendly parks and dog friendly day trips.

Questions from Varsity Lakes dog owners

How far is Pets Juicy from Varsity Lakes?

Roughly twelve to fourteen minutes east via Christine Avenue and Bermuda Street to Mountain View Avenue, Miami. There is a loading zone directly out the front and free street parking either side.

My Cavoodle puppy's coat suddenly started matting. What happened?

The adult coat came through, usually somewhere between eight and twelve months. Puppy coat is soft and forgiving and the adult coat underneath is not, and the matting starts close to the skin where it does not show from the top. Brushing right down to the skin two or three times a week through that transition is what prevents it. If it has already happened, bring them in and we will tell you honestly whether it can be brushed out or whether it has to come off short.

How often should a dog that swims in the lake be washed?

Every two to three weeks between full grooms if they are in the water regularly. Lake water leaves fine silt that settles under the guard hairs and compacts as it dries, much like sand does. It sounds gentler than salt water and it behaves about the same once it is in an undercoat.

What does a groom actually cost?

Full grooms start at $100 and washes start at $60. The final price depends on your dog's size, coat type and the condition it arrives in, which is why the booking page asks for size. A matted coat takes longer and costs more, and we would rather be upfront about that than surprise you at pick-up.

When are you open and how do I book?

Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm, at 1/22 Mountain View Avenue, Miami. Booking is online only, which keeps the phone quiet and the studio calm. Pick your service and size on the booking page and choose a time that suits.

Do you take Afterpay?

Yes. Afterpay is available at online checkout on grooming, washing and daycare, including daycare packages.

Can you handle nervous or senior dogs?

Yes, and it is a big part of what we do. Tell us in the booking notes. We work at the dog's pace, keep the same groomer across visits where we can, and skip the high-velocity dryer for dogs that find it frightening. For very anxious dogs we will often split the job across two shorter visits rather than push through one long one.

First time getting a dog groomed. What do I need to know?

Not much, and you do not need to prepare anything. Book the service and size online, put anything we should know in the notes, and turn up. If you are not sure which service you need, say so and we will sort it on the day rather than defaulting you to the expensive option. You will get an honest update at pick-up, including anything we found that you should keep an eye on.

Do you offer hand stripping?

No. We do not offer hand stripping. If your dog has a wire coat that genuinely needs it, we will say so rather than clip a coat that should not be clipped.
