Built for Currumbin dogs

Currumbin is a beachside village with a serious dog-walking culture. Locals are out with their dogs before the sun is properly up, and most of those walks end somewhere wet.

That suits the working breeds that live here, but not their coats, which hold salt and creek water long after the dog looks dry on the outside. We deshed properly and dry right down to the skin, rather than sending a dog home damp underneath.

Creek, beach and off-leash spots around Currumbin

The rule plenty of locals get wrong is the creek mouth. The City of Gold Coast lists Currumbin Point and the Currumbin Creek foreshore along Duringan Street as a dog prohibited area, so no dogs there at any time, leash or not. Currumbin Beach isn't an off-leash beach either. Dogs walk it on leash, including on the sand down to the low water mark, and never within 200 metres of the flags.

The good news is just across the water. The off-leash beach at Palm Beach South runs from Lifeguard Tower 13 down to the Currumbin Creek groyne, including the inlet at Rockview Public Park, directly opposite Currumbin Point. Away from the beach, there are off-leash areas at Preston Park on Michel Drive, Palmer Family Park on Noojee Street and Currumbin Hills Park on Bienvenue Drive in Currumbin Waters, and Ridge Top View Park on Currumbin Creek Road in Currumbin Valley. Boundaries are specific, so check the signs on arrival or the City of Gold Coast dog exercise area map before you go.

Wherever you end up, the outing comes home in the coat. Salt and sand dry into a double coat fast and pack into the pads and behind the ears. A warm wash and a full blow dry gets it out properly, rather than leaving it against the skin until the next swim.
