Miami with a Dog: Beach Rules, Off-Leash Parks and Cafes
Miami with a dog at a glance
Miami is one of the easiest Gold Coast suburbs to own a dog in, once you know where the lines are. Miami Beach is lead-on only, and dogs can't go within 200 metres of the flags at Tower 21, which is patrolled every day of the year. For an off-leash run, council's register lists two local spots: the northern end of Ernie Tebb Park on Mountain View Avenue, and the area around the lake at Pizzey Park. Add a coffee at The Henchman or a bagel on Hillcrest Parade and that's a proper Miami morning. This is our home suburb. Our studio is at 1/22 Mountain View Avenue, the same street as Ernie Tebb Park, so this is the guide we'd hand our own regulars.
Park and beach rules below are checked against City of Gold Coast sources, including the latest consolidated Animal Control Area Register, dated 28/07/2026. Venues were checked in October 2026. If a sign on the day says something different, the sign wins.
Miami Beach: leads on, flags off limits
Miami Beach runs from the rocky headland at the southern end up to Nobby Beach, and it's an on-lead beach the whole way. Council's Miami Beach page notes a dog prohibited area: no dogs within 200 metres of a flagged swimming area. Tower 21, on Hythe Street near the surf club, is patrolled from 8am to 5pm every day, all year. Tower 22 at Santa Monica Road adds patrols on weekends from November to April and in school holidays, so the no-dog stretch grows over summer.
The local move is to walk before 8am, before the flags go up, on a lead along the firm sand at the waterline. Miami isn't an off-leash beach at any hour. The nearest legal off-leash beach is Tallebudgera, a short drive south past Burleigh (until the training wall works finish in December 2026, dogs must be on a lead there on weekdays from 7am to 5pm), and our Gold Coast dog beaches guide has its exact boundaries along with the rules for every other beach.
Off-leash in Miami: Ernie Tebb Park
Ernie Tebb Park is our street's park, and council lists it as an off-leash dog exercise area. The catch is that it's only part of the park. Council's map puts the off-leash section at the northern end, the leafy, treed block at the top, well away from the John Handley Community Complex at the southern end. Outside that marked area, leads go back on, and as everywhere on the Gold Coast, dogs aren't allowed in playgrounds.
It's a shady sniff-and-potter spot rather than a big open oval, which makes it a nice way to settle a dog before or after an appointment with us. Check the boundary signs before you unclip, and clip back on before you leave. The register and maps are on council's Animal Control Area Register page.
Pizzey Park: the lake and the dog beach
Pizzey Park is the big green space between Miami and Mermaid Waters, and it's the one we send most people to. Council's register lists it as Pizzey Park, Pizzey Drive, Mermaid Waters, with the off-leash area around the lake between the tennis courts and the athletics track. Dogs swim from the sandy entry known as Pizzey Park Dog Beach, which is where the Paddle and Paws Splash and Dash, a paddle, swim and run you do with your dog, started in January 2026.
Know the no-go zones too. Several of Pizzey Park's sports fields and courts are dog prohibited areas on council's map, and since 2025 that includes the Burleigh Heads Rugby League field off Pacific Avenue on the Miami side. Stay inside the off-leash area around the lake and you're fine. Our fenced and off-leash dog parks guide covers the rest of the city.
Walks: the Oceanway and the headland
The Gold Coast Oceanway runs along the Miami foreshore, right beside the sand, through the narrow beachfront park with its shade structures and showers. It's on-lead, flat and easy, heading north to Nobby Beach and south toward North Burleigh.
At the southern end, the rainbow staircase locals call the Miami stairs climbs the headland to Mick Schamburg Park, where the lookout views run north to Main Beach and south to Coolangatta. It isn't national park, so dogs on a lead are fine, but keep out of any playground and take water on hot days. Those stairs are a real effort for short legs, older dogs and flat faces, so carry the little ones or take the slope.
Where dogs can't go in Miami
Miami Bushland Reserve, Bardon Avenue. Council lists the reserve as a dog prohibited area, so leave it off the walking loop.
Miami Marketta, Hillcrest Parade. The night market's own rules list pets as not permitted, guide dogs aside. Leave the dog home on market nights.
Precinct Brewing Co, Christine Avenue. Its own FAQ says dogs aren't permitted, because of its licence.
Coffee, bagels and a gin with the dog
The Henchman, Henchman Avenue. A licensed outdoor cafe, bar and restaurant set in a leafy courtyard, a couple of hundred metres back from the sand. The Henchman calls the whole place dog friendly, which makes it the obvious stop after a beach walk. Its listed hours have been changing, so check the Henchman website before you head over.

UE Bagels, Hillcrest Parade. The Miami store opened in February 2025, the newest of three, with bagels that are hand stretched, rolled and boiled. UE Bagels says it has dog-friendly tables at each location, so grab one outside and let the dog supervise the crumbs.

Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery, Lemana Lane. A family-run gin, vodka and whiskey distillery in the laneway precinct on the Burleigh side of Miami. Granddad Jack's describes itself as family friendly and dog friendly, food is BYO, and walk-ins are welcome, with bookings recommended.

Paddock Bakery, just over the line in Burleigh Heads. The old Queenslander turns out wood-fired sourdough, and Paddock Bakery says dogs are always welcome on a lead. Look for the row of dogs waiting at the picket fence and the old washtub that doubles as a shared water bowl. It opens at 6am every day, and weekends fill up early.

After the walk: lake water, salt and ticks
Miami dogs get a double dose: salt and sand from the beach, and lake water and muddy paws from Pizzey. Rinse with fresh water before the coat dries, getting into the armpits, belly, paws and ears. The scrub around the lake and the bushland edges is tick country, including paralysis ticks, so run your hands over the head, neck, ears and between the toes after every outing. In summer, test the footpath with the back of your hand before a walk along the highway. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws.
When the beach sand or lake funk won't shift at home, a warm dog wash and blow dry at our Miami studio gets it out properly, right down to the skin, with Australian-made, plant-based Melanie Newman products.

Are dogs allowed on Miami Beach?
Yes, on a lead, and never within 200 metres of a flagged swimming area. Tower 21 is patrolled from 8am to 5pm every day, and Tower 22 on summer weekends and school holidays. Miami Beach isn't an off-leash beach.
Where can my dog run off-leash in Miami?

Had such a good experience at Pets Juicy. My dog Monty had the worst mats in his ears and I was honestly so stressed about it. Best haircut in 16 years for my spoodle
I’ve brought my two pups to Pet’s Juicy a few times now, and every visit has been such a positive experience. The team is incredibly gentle, caring, and clearly loves what they do! Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. Also the staff was very accommodating, booking was easy and prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back!

Our 15yold Moodle has lots of bumps and lumps. Had been avoiding groomers due to fear of distress. Had been recommended Pets Juicy and couldn’t be happier. Easy to book, lovely reception on arrival and felt very comfortable. And in picking up our dog, he was happy calm and looked wonderful.

Highly recommend the Pets juicy team to look after your furry babies. I was so hesitant and nervous as I’d never had my dogs previously looked after but moving interstate and trying to take our family to theme parks left me no choice but to bite the bullet and try. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.

Amazing service! After being told by multiple groomers across the GC they weren’t taking on anymore large breed clients, I came across Pets Juicy who were more than happy to help. Both dogs groomed the next day and was better priced than I expected! Will definitely be using them from now on.
