Mermaid Beach with a Dog: Beach Rules, Oceanway and Cafes
What to know about Mermaid Beach
Yes, you can take your dog to Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast, but only on a lead and never within 200 metres of the red and yellow flags. There's no off-leash sand in the suburb. For a proper run, head to the off-leash end of Pratten Park in Broadbeach or the lake at Pizzey Park in Mermaid Waters. In between, there's an on-lead stroll along Hedges Avenue and the Oceanway and a run of highway cafes where a dog under the table is no drama. We groom plenty of Mermaid Beach dogs in Miami, just down the road.
The beach: lead on, flags well clear
City of Gold Coast lists Mermaid Beach as having a dog prohibited area: no dogs within 200 metres of a flagged swimming area, and a lead everywhere else. Two patrol towers matter. Tower 26 at Montana Avenue, near the surf club, is patrolled from 8am to 5pm every day of the year. Tower 25 at Hilda Street keeps the same hours daily from November to April and in school holidays.
The easy fix is to walk before 8am or after 5pm, when the flags are packed away and the sand is cool on paws. Most of the beachfront is homes and units, so you reach the sand along the access paths at the cross streets off Hedges Avenue. Ken Mansbridge Park, opposite the surf club, has tables and shelters for a shady water stop.
One hazard: council warns against walking on or beneath the steep sand scarps here, because they can collapse. Live patrol status is on council's Mermaid Beach page, and our Gold Coast dog beaches guide covers the off-leash beaches at The Spit and Tallebudgera. At Tallebudgera, dogs must be on a lead on weekdays from 7am to 5pm until council's training wall works finish, scheduled for December 2026.
Hedges Avenue and the Oceanway
With houses fronting most of the sand, the coastal route through Mermaid Beach is the pedestrian and bike lane on Hedges Avenue, a block back from the beach. Head south and it joins the Gold Coast Oceanway through Nobby Beach to Miami, a stretch council describes as grassy picnic areas, outdoor showers, fitness stations and shaded seating. North, it runs into Broadbeach's beachfront parks.
Council's rule for the whole Gold Coast Oceanway is simple: keep dogs on a lead. It's a busy shared path, so keep the lead short. Playgrounds and barbecue areas along the way are dog prohibited.
Off-leash parks near Mermaid Beach
All four below are in council's Animal Control Area Register (consolidated 28/07/2026). Council closed consultation on changes to its dog areas in March 2026, so read the signs before you unclip. Boundaries are on the dog exercise area map.
Pratten Park, Broadbeach. The closest run for the northern end of Mermaid Beach. The off-leash area is the part of the park south of Margaret Avenue on Old Burleigh Road, excluding the Oceanway footpath through it, so clip back on at the path. It's open rather than fenced, so recall matters.
Pizzey Park, Mermaid Waters. Our local. The off-leash area wraps around the lake between the tennis courts and the athletics track, with agility gear and calm water for a paddle. Parts of the wider park are dog prohibited, so follow the signs.
Goding Park, Mermaid Waters. An off-leash area on Sunshine Boulevard and a quieter backup when Pizzey is packed.
Ernie Tebb Park, Miami. On Mountain View Avenue, the same street as our studio. Only the signed section is off-leash. Our fenced and off-leash dog parks guide covers the rest of the city.
Dog friendly cafes in Mermaid Beach
Mermaid Beach eats along the Gold Coast Highway and around Lavarack Road at the Nobby Beach end. These three check out on dogs, but ask before you settle in.
BSKT Cafe, The Oxley 1823. The long-running health cafe has moved from its old beachfront corner into The Oxley 1823 precinct on Lavarack Road. It calls itself puppy friendly, says it's there whether you're bringing the family or bringing the pup, and has a spacious outdoor dining area. Details on the BSKT website.

After the beach: salt in the coat
Sand works deep into thick and curly coats, and salt water left to dry leaves skin itchy and fur stiff. Hose off with fresh water once you're home, work it down to the skin, and dry the ears after a swim. If they've been nosing through the dune grass, check head, neck and paws for ticks.
When the sand won't shift, bring them to us. A warm bath with Australian-made, plant-based Melanie Newman products and a full blow dry lifts out what the backyard hose leaves behind.

Got my senior queen Lady (husky x GSD) groomed here when her regular groomers couldn’t fit her in (they would often cancel as well due to her size and hair type). Pets Juicy did an incredible job - Lady came back happy, smelling fresh and well de-shedded. Had such a good experience at Pets Juicy. My dog Monty had the worst mats in his ears and I was honestly so stressed about it. The team were so patient and gentle with him, especially because he’s a bit silly and crazy They really took their time and made sure he was comfortable, and did an amazing job. Best haircut in 16 years for my spoodle
I’ve brought my two pups to Pet’s Juicy a few times now, and every visit has been such a positive experience. The team is incredibly gentle, caring, and clearly loves what they do! My dogs are always excited when we arrive! Their grooms are beautifully done, and they come home smelling amazing and happy every time. Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. Also the staff was very accommodating, booking was easy and prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back!

Our 15yold Moodle has lots of bumps and lumps. Had been avoiding groomers due to fear of distress. Had been recommended Pets Juicy and couldn’t be happier. Easy to book, lovely reception on arrival and felt very comfortable. And in picking up our dog, he was happy calm and looked wonderful.

Highly recommend the Pets juicy team to look after your furry babies. I was so hesitant and nervous as I’d never had my dogs previously looked after but moving interstate and trying to take our family to theme parks left me no choice but to bite the bullet and try. The team truly cares for the dogs as if they were their own, and I feel so comfortable leaving them here for daycare knowing they’re in safe hands. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.

Amazing service! After being told by multiple groomers across the GC they weren’t taking on anymore large breed clients, I came across Pets Juicy who were more than happy to help. Both dogs groomed the next day and was better priced than I expected! Will definitely be using them from now on.
