The Ultimate Guide to Beagles
The cheerful detective of the dog world
Beagles are small to medium-sized hounds with short legs, long ears, big eyes and a nose that has shaped human history. They're cheerful, curious, food-motivated, surprisingly stubborn, and capable of finding a sandwich crust hidden three suburbs away. They're also one of the friendliest dog breeds in the world.
If you're thinking about adding a Beagle to your family, or you're already a Beagle owner trying to make sense of why your dog refuses to come back when called, this guide covers what makes the breed tick: their history, their personality, their exercise needs, their training quirks, their health considerations and what life with a Beagle on the Gold Coast actually looks like.

A brief history of the Beagle
Beagles are an ancient breed. Hounds resembling modern Beagles appear in writing from ancient Greece, but the breed as we know it took shape in England, where small scent hounds were bred for hunting hare and rabbit on foot. The name "Beagle" likely comes from the Old French "be'geule," meaning "loud mouth," a reference to the breed's distinctive bay.
For centuries Beagles worked in packs, following scent trails through fields and forests with hunters keeping pace behind them. That pack history matters today. Beagles were bred to live and work alongside other dogs and humans for hours, every day. They're deeply social animals who don't enjoy long stretches of solitude.
The American Kennel Club recognised the Beagle in 1885. Today they're consistently one of the most popular breeds in the world. President Lyndon Johnson had Beagles. Queen Elizabeth II owned a Beagle as a child. Snoopy is a Beagle. Their cultural footprint is significantly larger than their physical one.
The Beagle nose is a working tool
Beagles have around 220 million scent receptors in their nose. Humans have about 5 million. That gap explains almost every Beagle behaviour you'll ever encounter.
That nose is the whole reason the breed exists. They were engineered over centuries to follow a scent trail with single-minded focus, to ignore distractions, and to keep going when other dogs would give up. That same wiring is in your pet Beagle on the Gold Coast.
What this means in practice:
- Off-leash recall is really difficult. Once a Beagle locks onto an interesting smell, calling them back is competing with centuries of breeding
- Secure fencing is essential. Beagles will dig under, climb, jump or squeeze through anything to follow a scent trail. They're world-class escape artists
- Walks should include sniffing time. A 30-minute "sniffari" where the dog sets the pace and chooses where to investigate is mentally more tiring than an hour of brisk walking
- Food motivation works. Their nose is wired to their stomach, and food rewards are unusually effective for training
The owners who succeed with Beagles are the ones who lean into the nose rather than fight it. Scent games at home, sniffing walks, snuffle mats and food puzzles all turn the breed's strongest instinct into something productive.
Two sizes: 13-inch and 15-inch
The Beagle breed standard recognises two size varieties:
13-inch Beagles. Up to 33 centimetres at the shoulder, weighing roughly 9 to 11 kilograms.
15-inch Beagles. Between 33 and 38 centimetres at the shoulder, weighing roughly 11 to 14 kilograms.
Most Australian pet Beagles are 15-inch or close to it. The two varieties have identical temperament, exercise and care needs. The size difference is mainly relevant for show breeders.
Personality: cheerful, social, stubborn
Beagles are one of the most consistently friendly breeds. They like people, other dogs, children, the postie, the courier and even burglars (which is why no one uses Beagles as guard dogs). The breed standard describes them as "merry," and that's the word.
The flip side is independence. Beagles were bred to follow a scent trail without checking in, which is the opposite of breeds bred to look at their handler for direction. This shows up as stubbornness in pet life. A Beagle will hear your recall and choose, with full information, to keep sniffing the gate.
Other personality notes:
- Vocal. Beagles bay (a long, melodious howl) when excited, frustrated or alone. They also bark, whine and "talk." Apartments with shared walls need to be considered carefully
- Food-motivated. Some Beagles are described as "stomachs with legs." Counter-surfing, rubbish bin raids and food theft are common. Secure storage matters
- Pack animals. Beagles thrive in households with another dog or with people home most of the time. Long days alone are hard on them
- Curious. They want to know what's in every cupboard, every bag, every box. Mental stimulation is non-optional
Exercise: more than you'd think
Beagles look small and compact, but they were bred for endurance. Adult Beagles need a minimum of one hour of exercise per day, and they're happiest with more. Two solid walks, plus a third short walk or backyard play, hits the right level for most pet Beagles.
Exercise variety matters more than raw distance. A mix of walking, sniffing, play and mental stimulation works far better than a single long march. Specifically:
- Sniff walks. 20 to 30 minutes of letting the dog choose the route and pace, exploring smells. Mentally exhausting in the best way
- Brisk walking. 30 to 45 minutes of structured walking, ideally on different routes to keep things interesting
- Play. Tug, fetch (if your Beagle plays fetch, congratulations, that's not all of them), wrestling with another dog
- Mental work. Snuffle mats, food puzzles, basic obedience practice. Ten minutes of mental work equals 30 minutes of physical exercise for tiring a Beagle
An under-exercised Beagle is a destructive Beagle. Chewing, digging, baying, escaping and counter-surfing all increase when exercise drops below the minimum.
Training: patience, food, and lowered expectations
Beagles are intelligent, but they're also one of the breeds least naturally inclined to do what you want.
What works:
- High-value food rewards. Roast chicken, cheese, liver treats. Beagles will work for food in a way they won't work for praise
- Short sessions. 5 to 10 minutes, multiple times a day. Long sessions lose attention
- Consistency. Every family member uses the same cues, the same rules, the same boundaries. Mixed signals are taken as opportunity
- Recall games at home. Run away from your Beagle, then reward them when they catch up. Builds the habit before the real-world test
- Long lines for outdoor recall. A 10 to 15 metre training lead lets you practise recall safely without losing the dog to a scent trail
What doesn't work:
- Punishment-based training. Beagles shut down or get sneaky rather than compliant
- Expecting reliable off-leash recall in a new environment. Some Beagles never reach this. That's normal for the breed
- Free-feeding. A food-motivated dog whose food is always available has no reason to work for it
Many Beagle owners never achieve reliable off-leash recall in unfenced areas. That's normal for the breed rather than a training failure. A long line, a fenced dog park or a leash for life are all completely fine choices.
Family fit: who Beagles suit
Beagles are a popular family breed for good reason. They're patient with children, they tolerate the chaos of family life, they get on with other dogs and they're small enough for most homes.
Beagles do well with:
- Active families with kids of any age
- Households with another dog or two
- People home for most of the day, or with secure dog daycare options
- Owners who enjoy outdoor activity and don't expect a quiet house
- Suburban homes with secure, dig-proof fencing
Beagles are harder for:
- People who work long hours and live alone (separation distress is common)
- Apartment dwellers in noise-sensitive buildings (the bay carries)
- People wanting an off-leash hiking companion they can trust
- Owners who can't accept a degree of independence and selective hearing
- Households with rabbits, guinea pigs or small pets the Beagle will see as prey
Health considerations
Beagles are a generally robust breed with a typical lifespan of 12 to 15 years. There are some breed-specific health issues every Beagle owner should be aware of.
Ear infections. The number one Beagle health issue. The long, heavy ears trap moisture and create the perfect environment for infections. Weekly ear checks, drying after swimming and professional ear cleaning at every groom can help reduce the risk.
Weight gain and obesity. Beagles are food-motivated and adaptable. They'll eat what's in front of them and ask for more. Weight gain happens fast, and obese Beagles develop joint problems, diabetes, skin fold issues and heart strain. Measure food, limit treats and weigh your dog regularly.
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Beagles' long backs and short legs make them prone to spinal issues, particularly as they age. Avoid letting them jump on and off high furniture, manage weight carefully and watch for signs of back pain.
Hypothyroidism. Common in middle-aged and older Beagles. Symptoms include weight gain despite normal eating, lethargy and skin or coat changes. Treatable with medication once diagnosed.
Epilepsy. Some Beagle lines are predisposed to idiopathic epilepsy. If you're buying from a breeder, ask about seizure history in the line.
Beagle pain syndrome (steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis). A rare immune-mediated condition seen in young Beagles, typically between 4 and 18 months. Treatable with steroids when caught early.
Cherry eye. The third eyelid prolapses and becomes visible. Surgical correction is straightforward.
Reputable breeders test for hip dysplasia, eye conditions and known Beagle genetic disorders. Ask for parental health certificates and meet the parents if possible.
Living with a Beagle on the Gold Coast
Heat. Beagles handle heat reasonably well but they aren't desert dogs. Walks in summer should be early morning or after sunset. Hot pavement burns paws fast. A cool, shaded backyard with fresh water is essential.
Beach days. Most Beagles love the beach. The catch is recall (again) and ear infections from salt water. Use a long line in unfenced beach areas. Rinse with fresh water afterwards. Dry ears thoroughly. Watch for ticks if you go bushwalking near coastal scrub.
Fencing. We can't stress this enough. Beagles will dig, jump, climb and squeeze. Fences need to be at least 1.5 metres high, with no gaps, with a barrier preventing digging underneath, and with secure latches on gates. A bored Beagle in a poorly fenced yard becomes a missing Beagle.
Tropical pests. Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes and grass seeds are all more active in the Gold Coast climate than in cooler regions. Year-round parasite prevention isn't optional. Check for grass seeds in ears, paws and skin folds after bush walks.
Humidity and ear health. The Gold Coast's humidity makes Beagle ear infections more common than in drier climates. Weekly ear checks and drying after swimming are non-negotiable habits here.
Is a Beagle right for you?
Beagles are wonderful dogs. They're also a real breed with real demands. Before bringing one home, it's worth answering these questions truthfully:
- Can someone be home with the dog for most of the day, or can you afford daycare three to five days a week?
- Does your fencing actually contain a determined small dog?
- Can your household tolerate baying and barking, especially during separation, excitement or boredom?
- Are you prepared for an exercise commitment of one to two hours per day, every day?
- Can you accept a dog that may never have reliable off-leash recall?
- Are you willing to manage food obsession through measured meals, secure storage and limited treats?
- Do you understand the ear, weight and back issues the breed is prone to?
If the answer is yes to most of these, a Beagle could be one of the best dogs you'll ever own. They're affectionate, funny, resilient and properly social, and they'll be an enthusiastic part of your life for the next twelve to fifteen years.

Best haircut in 16 years for my spoodle

Sami looked and felt absolutely fabulous after her long haired deshedding service. The team did an awesome job with my golden girl who hates her nails being trimmed. Our vet couldn’t manage trimming Sami’s nails without sedation but the team ensured she had a proper and perfect dogicure. Being a water lover, Sami had some matting which the team were able to also tidy. 10/10
Awesome open space, needed for our local area
This was our first time at Pets Juicy and we were very impressed with our visit. It’s a very friendly space and I liked how my pup was able to hang out with the day care dogs while he waited for his cut. I would highly recommend Pets Juicy . I popped in this morning to see if they could possibly trim my 14 year old Boxers nail's.
I was in Awe... usually Ruby is a shaking mess and stressed in new situations.
Shane took Ruby through to the grooming room and tender to those nails while I waited.
What I witnessed was a serene/happy atmosphere in the doggy daycare area and Ruby was relaxed on the grooming table while her nails were attended to.
